Study: Nearly a Third of U.S. Adults Rated Obese

Americans are even fatter than they think they are, with nearly a third of all adults ? almost 59 million people ? rated obese in a disturbing new government survey based on actual body measurements.

One in five Americans, or 19.8 percent, had considered themselves obese in a 2000 survey based on people's own assessments of their girth.

The new 1999-2000 survey puts the real number at 31 percent ? a doubling over the past two decades. The new number is considered more reliable since people consistently underestimate their weight.

Yeah, but I'm not fat! LOL!

6ft tall, 75 kg.

theking 10-08-2002 09:53 PM

I am surprised that it is only a third. My guess would have been 50%. I went to the County Fair this year and I thought the hogs had escaped from their pens.

But are you ready for this...

According to ideal weight charts a 6'2" small framed man should weigh between 155 - 168, medium framed 165-178, large framed 172-197.

You must be big-boned.. (ducking and running for cover)

UnseenWorld 10-08-2002 09:59 PM

Those height/weight charts are great for statistical purposes, but with all the different body types out there, they are pretty much worthless and inappropriate to apply to an individual.

.:Frog:. 10-08-2002 10:04 PM

I'm too thin. 6'0 170 pounds.
I'd like to weightlift and get my weight up 5-10 pounds.

lol nope,I think I'm under weight... Told by a minor league coach I would have to put on 10 pounds if I wanted to continue to be a catcher any further...Unlike most people here,HA,I'm only 5% body fat

eru 10-08-2002 10:07 PM

I bet the percentage of overweight webmasters at internext was like 75%. I like fat people. They die faster.

tiger 10-08-2002 10:38 PM

Yeah the thing they don't tell you is that their method of determining who is overwieght is completely ridiculous.

A bodybuilder that has 3% body and is 6 feet tall and about 250 lbs. would be considered obese. Which is obviously absurd.

People put to much in numbers. There is a lot more to a persons health then their height and weight.

They say this same stupid shit every year.

That was exactly my point. A better scale involves a good calculation of an individual's own BMI. There's alot more to it. And of course..anyone can sway statistics to fit what they want to claim.

Really? I doubt it.

Russians do not have a choice of 5000 different types of bread, 1000 different types of hamburger.

ControlThy 10-09-2002 01:34 AM

Its not like Russians have the same decadent lifestyles as Americans. (or any other Western nation for that matter).

They don't have money to go to MCDonalds every evening.

5000 different types of bread? What grocery store are you going to? and why would having more choices of bread make you fat?

No, not when it comes to food for the average worker in Russia.

kmanrox 10-09-2002 04:13 AM

it's all about what you eat andy our habits.... if you exercise alot and eat not so good, u should be fine, if you exercise and eat like shit, you will have a lil blubber,

if you eat FAST FOOD MORE THAN once aweek MAX, and dont work out, you will become obese....

thai ppl arent fat, very few are fat... they eat well, rice, vegetables, fish, poultry (or cat not sure which they serve westerners) .....

the availability of fast food is scarece out here too... and when there is a KFC, or McDonalds, or Pizza Hut, it is almost the same exact prices as in America, and most ppl in thailand cannot afford that...

I eat a lot of rice and chicken... room service, full meal, with tip included is about $1.75 haha and im talking 5 star accomodations ;-)

i would say he is pretty lanky, im 5'11" same weight as him 195# and i have no fat on me (granted i train with heavy weights regularly)

BobbyR 10-09-2002 07:31 AM

I think that the national average is a little off these days. Almost everyone I know is way more health concious then 10 years ago.

But if anything is making our society more obese as a whole is that we are busier than we were 10 year ago and are more likely to grab some fast food when we don't have time to cook. That shit will kill ya. I did read that the average american eats fast food 3 times a week. That will add 2 lbs of fat a month to your frame. Do that for an entire year and you've gained 24 lbs.

OUCH!

McAttack 10-09-2002 08:04 AM

I absolutely believe it and actually, 30% sounds low. When I went to the UK, the amount of people that were overweight was so small. I can't even remember even noticing anybody that I found overweight. You go to a restaurant, and the portions are normal size.

You go to the states, portions are HUGE, and it looks like every restaurant tries to out-do each other. That's just crazy! I remember going ot the Cheesecake Factory in LA. The appetizer plates were bigger than most meals in other countries!

Here in Canada, unfortunately we're being influenced a little by american eating habits. The numbers probably aren't as high, but they're up there.

i was watching this on CNN and they did by taking individuals into clinics and measureing their body fat %

you keep telling yourself that a mouth full of Oreos is "genetic" - as for myself, i think its pretty clear that the US is TOTALLY OFF THE CHARTS when it comes to weight issues. Its immediately visable and apparent... especially in younger kids.

if you can deny that, you have not done much travelling in the world.

corvo 10-09-2002 11:30 AM

thats a lot of fat ppl.
australia isn't that bad, but since we always seem to follow american trends, give us 3 to 5 years and we'll catch up.

as for me, i think i'll just work out.
