capturing HDV from mini DV tape

Having problems capturing HDV from mini DV tape and converting to avi...
Have Adobe Premiere Pro 2 however when capture it wants to output an mpeg..
I thought to get best encoding one would want scenes in avi format on external drive then we can send drive to encoding company.

Any ideas.

it has to be mpeg - that's the defined HDV format
