A lot of people still do not know how to properly ICQ someone. Why?

I don't understand why after this many years of it being around that so many still don't know how to use ICQ properly.

Why do so many people still contact someone by saying "u there?", "Hey man", or "yo" and then nothing else? How hard is it to just say what it is you want to say, or ask, whatever.

Just say it.

Because one of the things about ICQ I've always liked over other instant messagers is that the other person doesn't have to be online for you to send them a message. Hello? Is any of this reaching anyone's gray matter?

Please, God, enough with the "r u there?" crap. I get at least a dozen of these every few days, half the time left overnight and waiting for me when I log on.

I'll repeat this slowly so everyone can understand it. Got a message for someone on ICQ?....

Just . say . it.

r u there?

baddog 03-04-2008 03:47 PM

I never got a response to my last ICQ to you.

GrouchyAdmin 03-04-2008 03:48 PM

I can appreciate this rant; I get this all of the time, then when I attempt to contact that person, about a week, two weeks later, they pop back with the same god damned message.

don't think you can just invis me, i KNOW you're there
hey respond
come on
hello?
hello?
hello?

masterwebmonkey 03-04-2008 03:50 PM

Yo ... Hey are you around? (otherwise i'll ask someone else)

The last one I got from you was the one from about a week or so ago, but you and I were both on and we spoke. I haven't seen anything from you since.

Resend?

Someone needs to formulate an appropriate ICQ etiquette guideline.
We have them for cell phones now, not that anyone really follows them.

It always amazes me how odd and unprofessional people are when it comes to ICQ especially consdering it is the main line of communication in this biz.

Try an away message that invites people to leave some details about what they're contacting you for, reminding them to obfuscate URLs so that their message doesn't get blocked.

Of course this won't work if you're actually offline......

Tried that, but apparently a lot of people don't bother reading your away message.

What I don't get it when i send a message they ask me to send it again because they didn't get the whole message... strange.

I find that happens somewhat frequently if both parties don't have each other "authorized." :2 cents:

JFK 03-04-2008 07:29 PM

well, dont count on icq to get all messages tru, that is why I do say YO sometimes, this way they know I'm looking for them :2 cents:

Different clients have different line lengths, and if you are not authorized, some refuse to send the message until the receiver clicks 'authorized'.

So don't type lines over 500 characters, and wait a second from the first sentence, to the next.
