Final Farewell to Netscape Navigator ...

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/image...e_icon6666.jpg

A web browser that gave many people their first experience of the web is set to disappear.

Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 March 2008, the company has said.

In the mid-1990s, as the commercial web began to take off, the browser was used by more than 90% of people online.

Its market share has since slipped to just 0.6% as other browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox have eroded its user base.

baddog 03-01-2008 01:09 PM

I remember when they came out. Was my favorite at the time.

VeriSexy 03-01-2008 09:30 PM

RIP.. that was my first ever browser

Bojangles 03-01-2008 09:34 PM

We'll miss you, Netscape.

Kevsh 03-01-2008 11:10 PM

My first browser was NCSA Mosaic. I almost died and went to heaven when I downloaded Netscape 1.0. And not to be dramatic, but after seeing a few sites in 1.0 I made a career change, quit school and became a web dude.

TheSenator 03-01-2008 11:21 PM

RIP...I use to modify it to say NutScrape when visiting sites.

GrouchyAdmin 03-01-2008 11:22 PM

4.08 was still the best of the Navigator series. 4.5+ was so god damn crashy.

nico-t 03-01-2008 11:22 PM

yea i remember the netscape times.. . old skool

Cash 03-02-2008 01:16 AM

RIP, Netscape was buried by MS with IE ...

WiredGuy 03-02-2008 01:20 AM

I still use Netscape 4.08 for email to this day.

They cut their own throat when they set it up so you had to log into the browser. That was the last time I ever used it what ever version that was. It took everything over like a virus too..

as a side not I can't believe they didn't just sell it.

You can always pretend that Netscape lives on in RSS; they set the format for RSS 0.91, and RSS will probably live on for a few more years along with Firefox and other tools based on Gecko. :thumbsup

Netscape Navigator is the most important product ever created for the internet so far today. Essentially we view the web the way we do because of them.

well I know that, I mean why didn't AOL just sell it to someone.

JamesK 03-02-2008 02:59 AM

I hated it anyway.

Because they have their own browser....They probably bought it solely to shut it down.

The stats are a little skewed though if you keep in mind that Firefox is basically the next generation of netscape...

Netscape has been funding the Mozilla project since it began, and pay several firefox developers their full time salaries...
