What should I do with my old laptop?
 

It's pretty old and slow now.
It's a P4 Toshiba. I know I'll never use it again as my primary, so I'm looking for suggestions as to what I could do with it. Suggestions?

Piss on it...

Use it to run smaller tasks on that you dont want to tie up the other machine with.

Submitting galleries, editing videos. stuff like that.

Put Zenwalk Linux on it and it will give it new life.

Keep it for a backup, never know when you might need it

Let your children (or nephews) play with it or learn how to type correctly. :1orglaugh

ebay it, you can get good prices for old laptops.

Use it for surfing diseased websites.

That's one thing I actually considered, is to put a new platform on it and maybe learn something new.

Another suggestion I got was to donate it to a shelter.

Put it in a fed ex package and send it off to me:costumed13 lol

I'd say the same as the other guy. put linux on it and learn some new stuff.

Rebuild it into a picture frame. Hang it on a wall displaying your favorite pictures :)

- donate it to your version of CNIB (institute for the blind), or an equally deserving institution. We donate all our old systems to the CNIB.

or

- make it your firewall.

I would not waste my time with eBay. Why bother for the few pennies you'll get.

Mine came in handy as a backup when my primary died for 12 hours.

same problem here, every time a computer gets slow I buy a new one, now I have 6 laptops and 5 pc's just sitting here, all my friends and family already have a used laptop or pc I worked on for a few months... I think I need more friends :-/

install debian, knoppix , ubuntu , etc...

i have 2 old that are collecting dust on my shells....was trying to sell them and nobody want to buy them....so they are still with me....who knows may be one day i will use them again....

I give all my old comp stuff to a charity that sends it to african schools.

Most of the schools and youth programs around here have some type of "cartridges for kids" program that takes ink cartridges, laptops, cell phones, dvds, video games, etc. They turn them in and get cash.

give it to me...hahaha...put it aside and use it for back ups or give it to someone who will have a use on on it...

p4 isn't really that old, you see pentium 450mhz on ebay go for 200-300+

Seriously, giving it to a relative or donating it are likely the best options.

Be sure sensitive data is cleared off, especially if donating to a charity; data can hide in places that aren't readily accessible in a Windows system...

Ie. index.dat files - to delete them, one first needs to open a DOS window, stop "explorer" (no relation to iexplorer which too may likely be running) in the Task Manager (do not close the window), and then locate and delete the index.dat files. Glossed over some details about index.dat, but the point is a lot of stuff can be left lurking - likely not a big deal, but could be depending on what the computer was used for / contained.

Again, giving to relative / donating is likely the best option ...

If deducting on taxes, be sure to get a written acknowledgement of the dollar value of the donation, which is now required regardless of the amount. Even cash (ie. collection plate at church) now has to be documented, but I digress.

I had an ancient Pentium 133MHz laptop stolen from my home, about 7-8 years old at the time, and got a brand new business grade one with all of the nice stuff such as bluetooth and wifi a/b/g as a replacement from my insurance co. Unfortunately the thieves missed the little 486sx25 laptop with 4MB RAM and 120MB HD (I am not kidding) that was in another room. :1orglaugh
