FISA provides financial remedies for people who have been illegally wiretapped. Code provision 50 U.S.C. § 1810 imposes civil liability on any person (or entity) for each violation of FISA. Victims of illegal surveillance are entitled to recover $100 for each day they were wiretapped, or actual damages over $1000, whichever is greater. Additionally, FISA provides compensation for attorney?s fees and other costs of litigation. This is good news for private citizens and their lawyers who contemplate facing off against well-funded corporations with truly staggering financial liability at stake.

problem: they lack legal 'standing' to sue over it because they can't prove that they were suspected terrorists, but neither can they find out who was actually suspected, because this is a matter of national security.

Unless, of course, an amendment to FISA gets through.

If that's not something you agree with, be sure to write/call your Representatives.

It seems the House has finally grown some balls and is standing up to the Executive... for if it wasn't for them, this would already be a non-issue... the Senate had passed an amendment.

I think this is a cause worth chiming in on.

Nany Pelosi and my Rep have both already heard from me (right after the Republican protest walk-out last week). It just takes a couple simple phonecalls - not even a minute each, and lets the powers-that-be know that we won't stand for the telcom companies getting a free pass after violating citizen liberties.

Didn't the whistle blower basically say he routed ALL calls into the "back room"... Seems to me it's not going to matter whether anyone was suspected of being a terrorist or not.. Why do you think the telcom companies want the law to be passed that gets them off the hook... They gave the government all the calls they wanted and have now gone "whoops"..

you must have standing to bring a lawsuit
if you cant prove your were wiretapped, how can you sue ??

FBI, NSA and whoever else will not release such info.. dont hold your breath for it.

This is why a bunch of politicians are primarily concerned with the provision in the wiretapping bill extension (that was NOT passed) that exempts private companies from lawsuits.
Remember a week ago before Bush went to Africa and was saying how much danger we'd be in because democrats refused to deal with the bill? And instead wanted to debate about the fired federal prosecutors? And the republicans all walked out? It was all over this issue.

Yep, you're right. Yeah why didn't Bush just say "We are all going to die, if we don't do this..."? Haha what a jackass :1orglaugh
