Why are people afraid of death?
 

Why are people afraid of death, or why is it sad when someone dies?

I don't understand, since no one has "died" and come back to life, no one is to say which is better, alive or "Dead".

So when people are sad when someones dies, why is that, because they're selfish? Or perhaps it's because they feel "bad" for the person?

Who's to say the "afterlife" isn't better then the existence we know of?

Answer me that!

People fear what they do not know. You yourself said it, no one has ever come back from the dead to explain it to us, so we just do not know, and we probably never will. People do not like the thought that it is just over, and we have no proof otherwise, thus many fear death.

Yup, you're right. Death is a breeze and you shouldn't be afraid of it. Allah/Jebus/etc will be at your side and you will have virgins to fuck and clouds to ride on. Go kill yourself please. Thx.

Your mind didn't exist before you were born. What you perceive as your personality is intrinsically part of the physical matter of your brain and the way that the neurons connect. "You" aren't just some metaphysical force riding in your body like the driver of an automobile who can park it and leave anytime and still be intact.

people fear Death because 99% of human beings fear the unknown and there's no bigger unknown than Death. thinking of yourself and your family and friends as rotting corpses under the ground whether you believe in an afterlife or nothing at all still is unsettling at the very least.

the sadness comes from saying goodbye to your loved ones and face it - you are saying goodbye to yourself - we spend our lives talking to ourselves, we are our own best friends. i see lots of tears at airports when somebody is going away on a long trip or moving away. well death is the last trip and most people believe it's the end - no afterlife, no happy reunions up in heaven with your family and friends.

What are you serious about? Being anxious to die?

People are afraid of death because when they die, they loose everything they got here on earth. People cry when someone dies because they won't see the him/her one anymore.

not personally afraid of death it self .. if I was to go in a peaceful way like my grandfather passing away behind the wheel of his car ..not like the 3 people in the back screaming in fear for their lives ... but truthfully I would be more afraid for my family and children .. their sadness and loss scares me much more ..

Afterlife is a completely irrational concept, naturally invented by beings which are self-aware. It's logical to wonder about death, but completely nonsensical to consider it to be anything but the end.

How about death by being eaten alive? So, one minute you are alive and happy and pointing at the lions, then you are being clawed and your ass is ripped open by a lion as they gnaw and chew on you, all the while you know exactly what is going on. Eventually, the wounds kill you but by then you've suffered for 5 minutes watching and feeling yourself being eaten by lions. Are you afraid?
