It's over. Blue Ray wins

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high-definition video, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-Ray technology backed by Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), a company source said on Saturday.

Klen 02-16-2008 07:30 AM

Good, now i hope we will see cheap blue ray recorders avaible.

selena 02-16-2008 07:39 AM

Outstanding. I've been putting off buying one for fear of chosing the 'wrong' format.

Violetta 02-16-2008 09:08 AM

I saw a blue ray dvd for the first time last night... DAMN that was some amazing quality!

Is "planning" doesn't make it official yet. They're going to wait until they get rid of some of the hardware they're sitting on before doing so. Then once they've suckered a few people into buying now defunct technology, they'll make the official announcement.

Won't be long before GatorB arrives to turn this into an arguement.

Why would I argue. I posted about this DAYS ago. And I was right. It was others, maybe you I'm not too sure, that were arguing that it wasn't over. What is your obsession with me exactly? Should I get a restraining order? Jeez if you don't like my posts just put me on ingore or ignore them one your own. You seem to think about me a lot. What a waste of your time. You are really starting to creep me out.

I bought an HD-DVD player (Toshiba) that came with 2 HD DVD Discs (Bourne Ultimatum and 300) and there was an HDMI cable in the box also. All of this for $130 - The HD up convert does a great job in my opinion and there is no need to buy a new Blu-Ray player yet.:2 cents:

Rapport 02-16-2008 11:46 AM

As much as I hate to see Sony's usual propriatery products succeed, I think it's good that there will finally be a standard. I was routing for you HD-DVD...but now...R.I.P.

tony286 02-16-2008 11:47 AM

It will be interesting if the price of blu ray players drops now. Im waiting for hd dvd sales now got a list of what I want to get.

VeriSexy 02-16-2008 04:03 PM

gornyhuy 02-16-2008 05:40 PM

I would think alot of people, ones that arent computer friendly or those on old systems or on dial up.

Iron Fist 02-16-2008 09:03 PM

Didn't Wal-Mart just announce they are only selling Blu-Ray DVD exclusively now and dropping HD DVD completely? I think that's pretty much the nail in the coffin if Wal-Mart is making that kind of decision.

DigitalDruid 02-16-2008 09:35 PM

Yeah people don't get that 1/3 of Americans do not have internet and another 1/6 only have dial-up. Most because they have no choice and will continue to not have choice. Any company that would abandon 50% of the country to go strictly with non physical media is stupid.

If America had a broadband plan I might agree that digital downloading would take over sooner rather than later. With the exception of Verizon and it's FiOS most other companies plans are if they can't make immediate money form you you're shit out of luck. Even though over time investment in rural areas will pay off. I'm 100% sure that it was hardly profitable to put phone service out in the boonies. I'm pretty sure the phone companies are glad there are MILLIONS of customers now living in the boonies they can make money from. They need to be thankful that their predecessors weren't as short sighted at they are.
