Got a mac for the first time

So I finally got a mac, and now I have no clue what to do with it. What's some cool things that I should start off on? Besides putting firefox on it....

teksonline 02-14-2008 09:02 PM

I tried making the switch and am now in the process of switching back. Mac sucks if you're a coder...and I happen to be a coder.

Are you fucking kidding? Coda or BBedit are probably the best coding software there is.

Babaganoosh 02-14-2008 11:58 PM

But, check out quicksilver. It's a must have app for mac. Also, if you do a lot of FTPing, use Captain FTP. I have checked out every single FTP client for mac and that's the only one I found to be even remotely acceptable. Everyone will recommend Transmit and I found it to be buggy as hell. It couldn't even transfer a directory full of subdirectories and files without choking. Cyberduck is another one people recommend. Also garbage.

There are some really cool tools for webmasters. My favorite is Coda from panic.com (same company that makes the shitty FTP client). Coda rocks and I really will miss that on my PC.

Coda kicks ass for sure. BBedit is wimpy compared to textmate.

Launchy on PC does the same.

digifan 02-15-2008 04:15 AM

What's so cool about quicksilver?

Hunter_ST 02-15-2008 05:18 AM

Tons of video tutorials at the bottom of the page:

For new users, watching the videos is way better than reading about it.

CS-Jay 02-15-2008 06:56 AM

Well, since all I do is code, I'll be checking out coda. Anything like the zend suite?

I heard macs are good for porn. So I suggest you do some surfing (for porn).

Evil Chris 02-15-2008 08:26 AM

I've been told that the transition from PC to Mac is tough for about a week, and then nobody looks back.

I'll probably get an Mac this year sometime.

So you agree with me now that macs blow? hehe Ftp was another reason my partners went back. Cyberduck suxored. He is now on Vista, and Ive switched from xp to all vista now, other than having dual boot on my main machine for the just incase scenarios. I even bought a nice shinny white and black Toshiba Qosmio with Vista ultimate on it. Nice and smooth works the way its supposed to. Dont have to hunt for some obscure program for mac that will let me do the stuff I easily did on pc.

Mac is a no thank you for me. :winkwink:

AssPirate 02-15-2008 09:09 AM

There are cool things you can do with Mac Computers example of this is the 3d effect with which the vista has it also although I could say that Mac shows better visual effects. Also you don't have to worry about viruses.

DjiXas 02-15-2008 09:36 AM

I'm no power ftper, as I use sftp on coda to browse remotely, but what's wrong with using the finder?
Apple-K
ftp://username:[email protected]/

opens up the remote location in Finder, then do what you want?

But, like I say, I'm no power ftp user at all. Can't stand the insecurity :winkwink:
