this new macbook air has one. very fast and completely silent
sony's tx series has them as an option, not sure about the other models

They have read/write errors instead. You can only flash them so many times before they die and the big ones cost a lot. Give them 5 years and they will own the market but like flat screen tvs, the first generation will suck.

At $400 or less I would pay for a 160 gb solid state hd.

They had a free fall detecting HD that was way cheaper, i guess it stops spinning if it starts to fall?

I've been using the Sony Vaio TZ with SSD drive imported from Japan for a while now and I love it.

The battery life is a lot longer since SSD consumes less, also very quiet and doesn't get too hot.

Best of all it is quick. I don't even mind rebooting anymore. :thumbsup

yup, no crashing. But read/write errors at some stage, and once failed .. you cant recover shit.

Strictly speaking you should be able to write at rates of 100MB/s for over 40 years with one of the latest 128GB flash drives (1 million write cycles)... It is likely that issues other than write cycle will cause failure first.

Writes are slower than normal 7200rpm drives so copying is slower etc. But reads are EXTREMELY FAST, especially big I/O reads requiring 1000's of files. Boot times are really fast and game and app load times are quite alot faster I've read.

I read alot about these SSD drives and we put one in a server on a high traffic site of ours for fun. Pushing 500mbit just 1 single 32 gig SSD no problem at all.

For reads they rock, i'm not sure if i'll get one for my next laptop or not. Still undersided on that. They cost about $800-900 for a 32-64 gig SSD from Dell.

Oh and that 1.6 Terabyte drive, LOL those things will cost $12,000-15,000. Memory will keep coming down in price but it'll be a couple of years more before you have ssd's in your desktops with 1 terabyte for less than $1000.
