People tend to forget that was nearly the entire sentiment behind the Second Amendment.

Ultimate authority in a republic is given to the citizen, and that authority needs to be supported by lethal force, and for all of time.

Ideally, though - in the U.S. - we have an opportunity to peacefully overthrow the regime every 4 years... though I'm sure many are of the view that we haven't really used that power in quite some time.
