Convicted Mother Allowed To Raise Baby In Prison

Doesn't seem fair for the kid .. starts life behind bars ....

Prince George, British Columbia (AHN) - A woman convicted of murder was given permission to take her infant daughter to prison with her, enabling her to look after the baby during her four-year sentence.

Imprisoned for fatally shooting her common-law husband in their Prince George home back in 2006, Lisa Anne Whitford, 37, gave birth to her baby last March, while she was being held in custody.

The four-year sentence was officially handed to her Wednesday, in a court proceeding, which Whitford attended via video, according to The Globe and Mail, as she was serving her sentence at the Alouette River Correctional Centre for Women.

Dave Lefebvre, a Correctional Service of Canada spokesperson, noted that while he was aware of a program that allowed for Whitford's situation, it was the first time that he had encountered a woman taking her child with her as she served her prison sentence.

Whitford was allowed to serve most of her sentence at the Fraser Valley Institution mother-child program.

"This policy to accommodate is only for inmates who give birth while in custody," said Lisa Lapointe, the spokesperson for the corrections facility. "Women offenders who already have children before sentencing are not admitted with them into the Alouette facility."

The UPI reported that aside from her sentence, Whitford was to never again own any form of firearms or ammunition.

... how many years would have it been if it was the man killing the woman ???

I would bet ALL that it would have been way more ....

dakota1358 02-08-2008 01:45 PM

4 years for murder don't sound right.Hell a man would get that for just punching his wife.

Fat Panda 02-08-2008 01:50 PM

thats fucked up in too many wayys

Syl 02-08-2008 01:56 PM

Yikes. I'm sure they think it's a good thing to not seperate the mother and child but that program doesn't sound like the best idea. Also, that sentence hardly seems fitting. :(

cherrylula 02-08-2008 01:59 PM

Actually, I think most guys who punch their wife get one over night in jail.. two at most.

More to come...the shocking, absurd and backwards shit this world produces will only increase at an accelerated rate until we're fucked like all previous societies

jhauser 02-08-2008 03:27 PM

wow all kinds of thoughts on this one. The child goes to prison because her mom killed another person. The mother still gets custody of the child. Shaking my head.

fatfoo 02-08-2008 07:13 PM

That's odd...

Useless Warrior 02-08-2008 07:26 PM

You guys make it sound like she's a bad person just because she decided to shoot and kill her husband. Who knows, maybe he was a real pain in the ass? Probably snored a lot. Had it coming, I say. I already don't like the dead bastard.

Mexico allows kids to be with their mothers in prison for up to six years. They have found there is a huge decrease in the repeat offender rate among those women who had their kids with them while serving their sentance.

Spunky 02-08-2008 07:43 PM

The kid might pick up some pointers

shahab6 02-08-2008 07:58 PM

I noticed lots of countries allowed to do that

CrkMStanz 02-08-2008 07:58 PM

no one goes to jail for a long time in Canada

unless they are actually innocent - then they'll be there a very long time

chopstick 02-08-2008 08:19 PM

The kid will grow up and kill her, and get 2 years plus E.I. for doing the city the favor.

JamesK 02-08-2008 08:23 PM

What the fuck does it matter. When he's older he won't even remember that he spent four years in prison :1orglaugh

Sure, that and for eliminating the homicidal biatch.

sortie 02-08-2008 11:05 PM

Strange.

Does British Columbia have a man slaughter charge?
If not then this might explain the sentence.

PMdave 02-08-2008 11:16 PM

you either remove people permanenty from society or you put them away for a short time. 15-20 year sentences are totay useless. No-one becomes a better person from sitting behind bars for 20 years. As far as the chid being ale to e with it's mother: way to go. Child did nothing wrong so doe not need to be punished by seperating it from it's mom.

VeriSexy 02-09-2008 05:01 AM
