Anyone see this movie? I watched it and it's was a great movie but I'm lost with the ending.

:helpme

DigitalDruid 02-07-2008 06:06 PM

yeah it threw me off too????

notoldschool 02-07-2008 06:11 PM

great movie. The ending was very important. watch again.

crockett 02-07-2008 06:12 PM

Yea it's like the whole movie is building up to one thing then something else happens. The movie and story was fucking awesome but the ending I'm not sure about.

tony286 02-07-2008 06:12 PM

yes watch it again and the book is a great read.

Fat Panda 02-07-2008 07:16 PM

very good book

D Ghost 02-07-2008 07:19 PM

I wanna see that!

RedShoe 02-07-2008 07:28 PM

SAG sent it to me on DVD a while back, I too felt like... like maybe we were watching a story that was half way through.

SPOILERS!!!!

I didn't quite understand how Sugar was involved. It was his money, but was it his drugs? How did he know the deal went bad? and what was Tommy Lee's role? He seemed like the narrator taking us thru the film, but then at the end... I dunno. I feel like... I feel like I wasn't smart enough to "get it"

I feel like everyone else got it but me. Everyone says it's bad ass. and I admit I enjoyed it, but just not sure I understood the ending, and I'm not a sheep that's gonna say it was great film.. especially since I didn't understand it.

And people like notoldshool, say stuff like, "The ending was very important. watch again." JUST FUCKIN TELL ME! Maybe it's that they don't get it either.

I think what we have here is a classic example of no one being brave enough to say they don't get it so everyone says "Shit I'm confused, that must have been a smart film, I'm gonna give it 4 stars"

I agree .. the end was confusing. he just walks away. i guess it was saying there is no quite retirement for guys like him ..he'll always be slipping out the back and hiding. there is no retirement to the country .. i really don't know but that was all i got out of it for a first watch. i'll watch it again ..maybe i missed something :Oh crap

As a cool Foreign dude once said... "You Americans are spoiled by your movies...Trained to have to have a Proper ending or a wrap-up ending"

The ending of this movie is just a non-typical/traditional ending.
It makes you think---and talk about it for a few hours after you leave the theatre.

That is the sign of a quality flick...you leave the theater and think about the characters on and off for the next two weeks. Love that shit.

tony286 02-07-2008 08:43 PM

I think the story was really about the sheriff. During the movie he speaks about the past how the old sheriff didnt even carry a gun and how things changed that he didnt understand. I think he saw it all now as senseless and not worth dying for. Remember when he going into the hotel and no one is there the relief on his face. The hero had lost his nerve.

Spoliers continue!!!!

Well this is what I don't get I also got the feeling the "story" was half told. At the start the Sheriff gets in his patrol car and he has that air powered cow killing thing.

So once I saw the bad dude kill that 1st guy with it, I'm thinking ok we are looking back at how the sheriff caught him. Then we go on this story that seemed to be building up with 3 guys traveling all toward the same path and it was gonna end with trouble.

So there is this awesome storyline and a well done movie with great characters that falls apart in the last 5 mins. so I'm like WTF I feel jipped.

bronco67 02-07-2008 08:58 PM

I got the movie was trying to say, but I didn't really like it. They basically play it out for 3/4 with a very straightforward crime caper -- and an extremely involving one at that --- then there's a thematic re-focusing of the entire film. The Coen brothers are basically saying, "hey, the movie's really about this.."

Then we get the long-ass ruminations by two old men, dropping all the deep shit on us. It wasn't really important what happened to Josh Brolin, although I sure as fuck would have liked to see how everything played out, instead of pulling the rug out from under me.

I'm all for a thoughtful, slow film, but don't set me up with a totally different movie at the outset. That's the coen brothers for ya.

I agree.. except I don't feel jipped. I feel like, we're starting a story with Slosh Brolin, but that we are sort of catching the middle of the Sugar storyline. And I'm assuming Tommy Lee is the narrator sort of telling us what's going on, but I'm not sure why Woody was in it. Just someone to kill I guess.

As for the foreigners that think a good movie is a movie you have to think about, you're wrong. We don't all have to have a formula storyline. (the word you're looking for is "formula") I could be completely content with this film, IF I just understood the ending. I guess I missed the ending.

Look at Fargo, did that story have any formula character arcs? No. Was it a good movie? Yes. Now look at Godfather. That movie has maybe one of the biggest character arcs in motion picture history and it's an awesome film. So not all movies have to follow a formula.

No Country certain didn't follow a formula, but I think it kinda falls apart at the end, and I still haven't heard one person here explain it to me, in a way that makes sense. You're all just guessing, so that tells me you are all just as stupid as I am.

CaptainHowdy 02-07-2008 09:07 PM

ARGH! Please don't post spoilers... gotta see that ending anytime soon.

You're right, in the end a plot is not what makes or breaks a film...some of the best films ever have almost no plot(but a narrative). Full metal Jacket, Goodfellas are some examples.

Saying a movie has no plot is not a good argument, but I hear it all the time from dimwits who didn't understand a film. "A didn't connect with B, and C wasn't wrapped up in a nice, neat little bow for me."

A moviegoer that likes everything spoon fed to them is just not going to like this film. There's always a couple of movies each year that are force fed to multiplexers and false-advertised as something juicy to lure them in. The studios make their money, but the inbred, mouth-breathing, porcorn gobbling masses feel cheated...and rightly so. They want to see Jim Carrey pop out and every five minutes and say "where's the beef?" or see that clean, wholesome negro Will Smith say a bunch of canned catchphrases. They don't want to think.

psili 02-07-2008 09:40 PM

The movie fucking sucked because it didn't deliver shit.

Yea, I'll concede I kept watching it because I wanted to see some outcome and after the first hour of getting jerked off by the flick by every twist that never turned, I kept watching... Hoping the fucking flick would deliver something. It was like a circle-jerk of link trades -- complete shit.

Yea, you'll have a bunch of self-absorbed masturbators quoting phrases from critics and shit saying the movie was great and it had some hidden meaning "you didn't get"... blah blah blah. To hell with that. Same type of people think Donnie Darko was some masterpiece.

/rant

Apologies... grouchy, I guess. :(

tony286 02-07-2008 09:42 PM

its like life its doesnt end neatly.

Nismo 02-07-2008 10:05 PM

I cried a little inside when they showed josh brolins character dead at the motel.

You are totally off there.. it's not about the movie not following some typical hero kills the bad guy routine.. It's because the movie led you into that storyline building up the drama and suspense pointing to that kind of ending, but then didn't deliver.

I don't mind thinking about a movie and wondering things.. However I do feel like it left me hanging and not in a good way. I wasn't left hanging thinking about what might happen but more left hanging by having the storyline pulled out from under me for no reason.

When I say I felt jipped it doesn't mean I thought the movie sucked, but rather like getting a blowjob then having your mom call. Meaning the end just kinda went limp..

DigitalPimp 02-07-2008 11:02 PM

I thought it was about that good guys don't always win and bad guys don't always get caught and a sheriff who came to realize he was too old for a newer generation of criminals hence the title. I liked the "friendo" scene.

Well the problem with that, is at the start of the move the Sheriff has the dude in handcuffs puts him in the back of his patrol car then places the cow killing thing on his front seat.

So he did apparently catch the guy, but we just never see how the hell he did it.

Actually I take that back.. it was the deputy and he later killed him..

RedShoe 02-08-2008 01:24 AM

I think we can ALL agree that the trailers made it look bad ass. See where I'm going with this?

The trailer was bad ass but the movie sucked and we all ended up paying for to see the movie. Why? Because the trailer lured us in.

Did I mention I'm open to editing trailers again? :)

If you have a shitty site, send me the footage and I'll build you a trailer that will bring 'em in.

voa 02-08-2008 01:45 AM

no i didn`t see yet but i heard some pretty good comments.

I already expressed that I felt the same way. They portrayed the entire film as very straightforward, and I too invested in Brolin and Bardem's story to even give a shit about Tommy lee Jones at the end. So, while I understand what was going on, I just didn't like it totally. I'd recommend it based on the first 3 quarters, because that stuff was better than most movies I saw this year.

Couldnt agree more. The sheriff realizes that there is no place for him left in the country. Whats so hard to understand? Maybe people weren't paying attention at the end. :2 cents:

TubeTitans_SusieQ 02-08-2008 12:32 PM

just didnt seem interesting enough for me to go and see :(

Ayla_SquareTurtle 02-08-2008 12:33 PM

I "got" the movie, but I didn't care for it much. What I certainly didn't understand were the overwhelmingly positive reviews.

tyler (durden) 02-08-2008 12:39 PM

i thought the movie was amazing and very well done. the sound editing was over the top awesome.

Who the fuck goes and watches a movie for sound editing????

That's like complimenting the gaffers.

RevengeBucks_Monica 02-08-2008 01:40 PM

I absolutely LOVED the movie, I thought it was fucking genius. But then I really enjoy movies that are more than just endless action leading to a solution. I'm not even going to bother talking about the specifics, I really think it's one of those either you liked it or you didn't type of things. Nothing wrong with that.

sitefarmer 02-08-2008 01:47 PM

Very nice movie, but this end make me discontented ..

Brujah 02-08-2008 01:50 PM

Should've ended with Sugar walking away the last time. With TLJ at the end, that was the odd part to me. I think it's supposedly straightforward and not really supposed to summarize anything or be a punchline in significance. That's life. It just ends.
