New twist on a 419 scam

Neighbor of mine put one of his apts up on craigslist for a weekly vacation rental. He gets a reply and sets up a 2 week deal for $2500.00. They send him a fake money order through the mail for $5k asking him to send back $2500 because they over paid.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Do these idiots actually get people to fall for this shit? Why the fuck would they spend that much time and energy trying to do such a stupid ass scam.

Not to mention it's now a federal offensive if they are caught, because they attempted fraud via US postal service.

BradM 02-07-2008 05:19 PM

People fall for it constantly.

People are idiots.

They do the same shit with cars ,laptops, etc, really anything for sale online...

lazycash 02-07-2008 10:38 PM

Its gotten out of control, my wife has listed a bunch of stuff on Craigslist over the last few months and the first reply she always gets is someone trying the same type of scam above. Its as if they don't even look at the item, they just auto send out tons of responses saying they are very interested and will send extra money for the shipping to pick it up. They then send a bogus check/money order and ask you to send the difference to some bogus address for the bogus shipping company.

VeriSexy 02-07-2008 10:39 PM

they keep doing it...because it works

Vick! 02-07-2008 10:45 PM

was neighbor supposed to send $2500 back before he receive money order, or what?

Deej 02-07-2008 10:51 PM

this is rampant... the over pay goes to some other agency while ouve sent the "rest" back to the sender and then when the agency that the "extra" goes to calls you up asking where the fuck their money is and why you are passing them false funds.. youre stuck with that bill and losing whatever yous ent back to nigeria...

happens a lot with ebay goods... like cars... the agencey would be a shipping depot or something...the sender is a band of nigerians

I'm not sure how they wanted it. He said the rental was going to be $2500 but they sent a $5k fake cashiers. The storyline was it was a doctor from the Marine core (no doctors in the Marines they use Navy Doc's) and was renting it for hgis parents or some shit.

Not sure exactly how or when they wanted him to send the 2.5k back.

The idea is that the victim receives it, queries the wrong amount, then they say "oops, I sent too much, please return the difference"

The original payment is fake
You send back a legitimate "difference" payment
Original payment bounces
You're out some $$$

rowan 02-08-2008 12:46 AM

BTW... if anyone ever pulled that trick on me I'd send it straight back and tell them to get the amount right. You should NEVER cash a cheque or MO that is so far over what you're expecting.

Yeah, some people just don't watch out
