Game developer turns down $11 million in royalties...

Quote:

Ryuta Kawashima, the researcher behind Nintendo's Brain Age series of games for the DS portable system, would rather be working than enjoying $11 million in royalties he could have earned from his creations.

"Not a single yen has gone in my pocket," Dr. Kawashima told the AFP in a recent interview. Kawashima, whose likeness was heavily featured in the best-selling Brain Age games, is instantly recognizable to almost 12 million gamers worldwide.

Under the terms of his agreement with his employer, Tohoku University in Japan's north-east region, Kawashima was entitled to accept half the Brain Age royalties personally. Instead, he used the proceeds to help fund $6.5 million in construction projects on Tohoku's campus.

"My hobby is work," he said. "Everyone in my family is mad at me but I tell them that if they want money, go out and earn it."

Kawashima, who strictly monitors his teenage sons' gaming time, is currently working on a four-year project to study brain development in children. He's also cooperating with Toyota to develop a car designed to keep elderly drivers alert.

He's not really a game developer, more like a scientist.
I read that he turned down $22 million.

cybermike 02-05-2008 09:21 AM

I read that he gave the money to his univeristy for research/infastructure improvements

nation-x 02-05-2008 09:57 AM

what an idiot

cheekycherry 02-05-2008 10:03 AM

What a twat

fardoche27 02-05-2008 10:05 AM

I'll take the cash!

notoldschool 02-05-2008 10:07 AM

what an irresponsible dick. Im sure he could have helped secure the future of his family (his only real responsibilty). Selfish if you ask me.

SmokeyTheBear 02-05-2008 10:09 AM

people r funny not understanding him..

he didn't "win" 11 million , he EARNED it.

If you win 11 million , chances are you won't win 11 million again. If you EARN 11 million it's easy to EARN 11 million again. If you have multi-millions and you have everything you need , the only thing you can do from there is to IMPROVE your surroundings.

Rodent 02-05-2008 10:10 AM

He could send that money my way!

Yup, he technically took it - but he wasn't selfish and gave it to a potentially good cause of research funding.

DaddyHalbucks 02-05-2008 10:14 AM

I agree it is irresponsible and selfish for him not to share the money with his family.

It's possible he's loaded already, but yeah, if he doesn't have a nice nest egg built up for his kids, he should have kept some of that money.

I bet he's already got money coming out his ass though, and will have no trouble making more of it.

Paper_Amar 02-05-2008 10:26 AM

Gotta give him props for it....

I mean im sure he HAS taken care of his kids... that 11 million for him is excess

Doctor Dre 02-05-2008 10:30 AM

Wow props to the guy.

I guess there still are some great people alive.

Stomped 02-05-2008 10:34 AM

He used some of that royalties to fund some scientific projects.
Why is he selfish and irresponsible? He earn like u$s 100.000 per year. His family is not starving...

StuartD 02-05-2008 10:34 AM

You all act as if he's not providing for his family enough already.
What do you know of him to make such judgments?

tranza 02-05-2008 10:50 AM

He's probably wealthy anyway.

Doesn't make much difference I guess.

Mutt 02-05-2008 10:56 AM

unfuckingbelievable - the guy does an amazing selfless thing and he gets attacked for it - on GFY of course it shouldn't surprise me.

did you hear what he said about his family? 'they can earn it' - nobody does any kid a favor by handing them money. i'm sure like any other family man he has some life insurance so if he dies while his kids are young they won't starve and will get to college.

bravo to the good doctor

Paco, of Large Cash. 02-05-2008 10:58 AM

Some say he is an idiot or twat, but I believe it is his kind that add value to our existence! He's that type of person that makes us all look like the greedy fuckers that we are!

Bojangles 02-05-2008 11:02 AM

I'm sure he already has enough money to be set for life. Guess money wasn't that important to him.

Phil 02-05-2008 11:10 AM

thats crazy

agreed
and look what type of research he is funding...

although I have to admit, I don't know that I could be that selfless....

cool1 02-05-2008 11:33 AM

Kudos to him for using the cash the way he wanted.

Mutt 02-05-2008 11:33 AM

oh i know i am not that selfless - makes me feel better about the world knowing there are people who are though.

sortie 02-05-2008 11:35 AM

The guy's smart. He'll never be fired from the university and even when he's wheel chair bound and 85 years old he'll still be on the board of trustees earning a million a year.

Plus this guy already got a mil or two in the bank from his work.

Plus he would lose any non-profit grants he's been getting over the years since he is now taking profit.

Plus, he probably used some of his non-profit grant money to do some of the reasearch that went into the game and might get sued for the royalties anyway if he takes the money.

The guy aint stupid.

Fap 02-05-2008 11:54 AM

Mo Money, Mo Problems

You are though...

I can't talk for this guy since I don't know him, but you should realise that there are very intelligent people who don't use their intelligence to feed their selfishness.

"Board of trustees, earning millions per year"? OMG dude, think out of your short-sighted mind-box... I bet this man has zero interest in pursuing such emptiness...

How do you know he's got 'a mil or two in the bank'? Once again man, you fail to understand how some people have other pursuits in their life than making lots of money.

RayBonga 02-05-2008 12:18 PM

That guy is so selfish. He should have spent it in bling, hoes and SUVs so that his family knew how cool he was

Miguel T 02-05-2008 12:27 PM

I would never turn down that amount!

STFU. You're so stupid that your brain stem has root rot. :1orglaugh

He was born in 1959. Do you have any idea what a million dollars will be worth when the guy turns 85 years old? It will be just a decent salary for a member of the university board at that time. Idiot!

Do you think he made any money already????

:helpme

The guy gets $100k a year from his job, so why doesn't he save the university some money and only accept $30k if he is so not into money.

Did I mention that you should STFU. :1orglaugh

d-null 02-05-2008 12:30 PM

how stupid of people to say he should give it to family

i could see if he was helping people that had no way of helping themselves, but giving the money to kids in exchange for no work is wrong

he is doing them a favor by letting them earn their own way in life

DigitalDruid 02-05-2008 12:36 PM

its good he put it into his school, but i couldn't see turning down millions

jalami 02-05-2008 12:38 PM

I like his way of thinking. There should be more people out there like him.

Haha you idiot, you still don't get it. He gets a good, fair salary from his university and is happy with that and not greedy. He's interested in the research he does, not so much in the money. He's intelligent.

This man is the exact opposite of you, that is what makes it hard to understand.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 02-06-2008 06:25 PM

Does not look like a sound business decision.

Phoenix 02-06-2008 06:50 PM

im sure he is not hurting for money...and he loves his work

while i dont understand him..i can respect him

i agree with you, also for some people it's about the work not the money. Our type of work doesn't tend have that type of thinking.

How is it selfish? It's the most selfLESS act he could have done. His family can get up and work ... if they don't like it, tuff :)

JamesK 02-06-2008 07:30 PM

He probably makes enough money and he funded something which gives him a great feeling.

I'd have done the same if I was so enthousiastic about something.
