Arizona Stadium Did you know .......

It's cool the way the field is rolled out of the stadium for sun and water then rolled back inside for the game.

Thats pretty nutty...

candyflip 02-04-2008 05:27 PM

I take it it's indoor and real grass? I didn't pay much attention to it yesterday.

shermo 02-04-2008 05:33 PM

WOW... that is impressive.. I was wondering how they handled the watering and sun, being as it is in a dome (retractable, but still).

bDok 02-04-2008 05:38 PM

cab driver i had in phx this weekend actually told me that. Was in shock. Only one in the world like that atm. wild.

Yes its real grass and indoors with a retractable roof. Even with the being able to open the roof and let sunlight in, it doesn't give the grass enough even light to grow so they made it able to be rolled out.

Kick Ass Chat 02-04-2008 05:41 PM

Thats awesome..:upsidedow

DigitalDruid 02-04-2008 05:45 PM

Thats Insane

Spunky 02-04-2008 05:50 PM

That's pretty cool..I wonder if a retractable roof would have been cheaper though

Sly 02-04-2008 06:22 PM

There have been a couple specials about it on Discovery. Very interesting how it was built.

Fap 02-04-2008 06:58 PM

wow that is insane

DatingGold 02-04-2008 07:07 PM

yeah pretty crazy

The stadium already have a retractable roof, but there is not enough light and sun going thru to keep a good quality natural grass.. So they build the rails to get te grass field outside for water and sun...

seems inefficent. you lose all that area that its moved to. what about it just raising up to roof level = no space lost, however, there may be other logistical concerns

Sounds like you once worked for the Army Corps of Engineers.

nope, im a capitalist and your wasting 1/4 to 1/6 of good real estate around a stadium and that is a solution that accomplishes your same goals, only using otherwise wasted roof space

my guess is that this was considered and it was a cost issue

Kelvin 02-04-2008 09:57 PM

I don't think it was a big issue for them. If you are familiar with the area, there is an abundance of space around the stadium. Plus I think they might still be able to use the field while its outside and an event is going on inside. That location was chosen mainly for its mass amount of available land.

Deej 02-04-2008 09:59 PM

crazy, I actually had this thought yesterday that they should make a roll out field... both for sun like that but also to have several different types of fields, whether it be differing turf or separate sports for one "pad" in a single stadium

NosMo 02-04-2008 10:18 PM

It is a very state of the art stadium that my tax dollars help pay for.....But the real nice thing about the retractable field is you can go from football to motorcross and not have to worry about messing up the grass. Now if Phx would just get a real football team....

Redesign the uniforms, rename them "Desert Rats" :winkwink:

VeriSexy 02-04-2008 10:33 PM

That is damn cool

Stevie 02-04-2008 10:46 PM

cheaper to put it on rollers than to double the ac bill by increasing the height of the roof....

CyberHustler 02-04-2008 10:49 PM

Crazy shit...

V_RocKs 02-05-2008 12:13 AM

I don't think desert areas worry about "area" to much. They have plenty of it.

NETbilling 02-05-2008 12:15 AM

They can do that but not cure cancer? WTF?

What, instead of opening the roof? What an insane solution...!

D 02-05-2008 01:56 AM

Crazy. I didn't know.

That's pretty damn cool.

Jerry Jones is building quite a show piece, will cost more than 1.1 billion and seat 80,000 - 100,000

Brother Bilo 02-05-2008 03:31 PM

Ya, it was pretty cool watching them build it. The news would update the progress every now and then. Just driving by and seeing it put together was cool.

Funny that I just found this thread.

2 minutes ago I finished watching "Build it Bigger" on the science channel and the show featured this stadium.

Interesting stuff.
