I am selling off some of my video game shit that I don't play. I always set a reserve price on items. I have done it that way for years. On one item in particular, someone sent me a message asking what the reserve price was. I ignored the message. I wasn't about to tell him what the reserve price is. That would defeat the purpose of auctions.

Then today I get another message from the kid: "I ask you again wuts the reserve price? This is second tiem I ask you. If you wo'nt tell me I will win the sale just so I can leave u bad feedback."

I obviously reported him to ebay but is it common to get people asking what the reserve price is? Do you tell them?

Yes it is common. Some people tell, some people don't. I wouldn't.

I hate reserve price bullshit, I start the bidding at the lowest price I will take and let the market set the sales price. I have over 1200 sales and that works great for me.

who does it hurt telling the reserve price?

maybe he is happy with it and instantly bids that much? if not he moves on...

if I know it will sell I start it at .99, if I have my doubts I start it for the lowest I will part with it

I always use a reserve price. I got fucked years ago when I "had" to honor something like a $20 winning bid on a Motorola programming cable that was worth a few hundred bucks.

the reserve is to protect you from selling it for far less then you want. Lots post the reserve right in the auction. They want to know the reserve because they are looking to buy and probably see another item just like it for less or more.

Reserve price protects you from low bids and your ego!

For exampe:

I think my domain is worth $50k but will accept $40k.
So $40k is my reserve, but because nobody knows this they bid $20k and
it's the highest bid I got.

$20k is below the reserve so I don't lose the domain.
After a few hours of reflection I then realize that I'm an idiot and $20k is a good price. I can then click a button and sell the domain to the bidder for $20k.

Now Im happy because my ego didn't prevent a decent sell.

If I had set the starting bid at $40k then I would have ended with no sale.
If I tell someone the reserve is $40k they will decide that it's no point in bidding $20k so I lose the sell. My ego was too big to set the starting bid at $20k.

So it is basically stupid for someone to ask what the reserve is because if they become discouraged by a high reserve then they don't bid and they don't have a chance of winning the auction.
Further, since I now know this person knows what my reserve is and he bids,
I also know he's comming in this willing to pay up to the reserve.
If my reserve is not met then I'm going to contact him and try to push him up to the reserve because obviously he wants it bad enough to contact me and even after hearing a high price he still bids on it.


No one who ever asked me what the reserve was ever bid after I told them.

Once I told someone "the reserve is more than $1000 and less than $500,000".

I also think you can block him from ever bidding in your auctions.

You should add that into the Q and A section of the auction so people can see what a piece of work they are.

Don't tell him anything. You are entitled to a reserve price.

I think there is a way to block a particular ID from bidding on your auctions. That way you could resolve the feedback threat.
