How hard is it to just hold it like you're supposed to hold a cigarette. Does it look cooler or something?

I guess it's traditional to smoke a joint like that.

I used to smoke it that way when I was 14. Now I smoke it like a cigarette.

And it's mainly Americans doing that now i think of it.

I'm no "expert," but I'm pretty sure that's how it's done in real life, too.

I'm thinking most joints (such as the one in your pic) don't have the constitution to withstand being pinched between the fore and middle finger.

Due to the smaller diameter of the joint it is easier to form a good seal at a slight angle thus increasing the velocity at which the air is drawn through also increasing the air to smoke ratio

When the joint gets down to the roach stage, it makes more sense to pinch it with the fingertips. They're much more tough and caloused and have fewer nerves than the "top" of your fingers.. You can get down to a much smaller roach with the pinching method..

At least Americans have been doing it that way since the 60's, too.

pinched finger and thumb to the lips has been the mime for "smoking a joint" for as long as I've known...

Cheech and Chong use to smoke that way back in the day as well..

I'm thinking a pinched finger and thumb is about as close as your could get your hand to emulating a roach clip... which is the entire point of the exercise, right? Two "tools" to the same end.

and also if you are passing it back and forth a joint will get fucked up pretty quick once its shorter and if someone doesn't "tab" one side of the opening to hold onto

Cigarettes smoked before filters were smoked that way also. Prime reason as there is no filter it burns to the end and you would burn your fingers smoking it like modern cigarettes.

This is based on cigarette knowledge as my dad used to roll his own not weed.

thats why I hold it that way, the finger tip calouses can be as tough as leather, so one does not feel the burn as much.

Does it make a blind bit of difference? You're still gonna get mashed anyway.

Some people have a natural habit of holding it like .... it's not to look cool unless you are a poser.

If I was to smoke one, I'd hold it like a cig until it got down smaller, then I'd pinch it like that. Less of my finger on the J, less of my finger to burn... you know, If I was to smoke one.

its for passing, holding a joint "cigarette way" is not really how you can pass it in a circle.

but I know plenty of people (including myself) that when you sit back and are in your home or in your backyard smoking ajoint by yourself, you smoke it like a cigarette.

you hold it like that to pass really, nothing more.

however, when it burns down, you HAVE to hold it like a pinch or youll get burned

i think it has something to do with americans not rolling a tip in their joints unlike we do around here... plus do they even roll joints with tobacco there? because the US joints in movies etc always look like the on in the pic, very very thin

Seems to be the regular way to hold cigars, too... thumb on one side and index (or index and middle) on the other.

i hold it with my thumb and middle finger, i usually have my hair spikey or my hat tilted to the side so i can feel extra gangster.

first time I smoked with someone from the other side of the ocean, they pulled out like 3 papaers, mixed tobacco with it, and made this really big joint out of california chronic and tobacco. Looks like a chinese yoyo, slim at one end, really fat at the other - said this is how "we do it back home" I said alright, lets do it.

i didnt like the tobacco in it, so I busted out the bong afterwards, but out of respect, I smoked it with him and learned that people from other places do things differently. Then I shoed how we do it in cali with iced down bongs and purple weed.

Well I'm enjoying my mid-day siesta and drinking some Reisling...When I'm finished firing up this half a blunt, I'll let you know.
