martinsc 01-27-2008 05:24 AM

that's a lot of porn....

MaDalton 01-27-2008 05:38 AM

thank god most of the people don't know how to find that.

mn 01-27-2008 05:57 AM

just wait till the big webbased providers (like easynews.com) discovers how to get 1000000% more signups....

if the surfers knew about usenet they would never sign up for a normal site again. everything is available in the newsgroups.

Drake 01-27-2008 05:58 AM

Nice lil stash of porn

TommyM 01-27-2008 06:13 AM

true - i have a friend who uses easynews all the time. i tried to explain how this affects our business, including mine. he understands, but still its hard to convince someone to spend hundreds of $ a month for several sites instead of $20 for one

How would you remove content from the usenet once it's there?
You are pretty fucked if that happens, aren't you?

Well GUBA (Gigantic Usenet Binary Archives) was run with the premise of allowing surfers to view these newsgroups through a web based viewer. I'll admit as an affiliate, it did pretty damn good, until it morphed into what it is today which is mainsteam videos, no adult whatsoever. The adult component that split off is called Skin Video, and they now do not have any newsgroups what so ever. Too much liability it seems, and C&D letters.

I have been a usenet fan since 1994 and I can tell you most of the users stay there because they have time and patience to find stuff, especially these says of spam... lots of porn doesnt mean instant gratification, on the contrary it comes saturation and frustration eventually
for the impulsive, impatient and selective porn seeker there is the web with the good designed and luring niche sites
Usenet is like a chinese buffet, all-you-can-visually-eat for 5.95. Good web sites are like Texas Logan's restaurants ;-) where you can find prime fresh pussy for 29.95 (like Selina's)
two worlds, to different customers to serve ;-)

GUBA was merely one of the more high-profile Usenet bandwagon hoppers that exploited Usenet content for profit. Many websites that I've known about over the years used newsgroup content on their site (or portals to areas containing leeched Usenet binaries) as a 'bonus feature' for paying members at one time or another. Many Yahoo groups and MSN communities routinely stock their groups with Usenet images and video.

As for surfers being aware of Usenet - I'm sure the vast majority of people on the web aren't too knowledgeable about newsgroups (at least the relative newbs in recent years)...but I suspect the numbers who access them are higher than we collectively guess at.

Likewise, I've been a fixture on Usenet since '93 or so (I still remember manually decoding binaries with UUencode before browsers could do it automatically), and I tend to agree with what you've said.

For the most part, I think Usenet still remains predominantly a geek domain though - populated mostly by people who would never pay for a commercial site membership anyways.

The newsgroup landscape has changed a lot over the years, though. The proliferation of spam has increased geometrically since the early days - making it more tedious and difficult to find the prime 'cuts of beef' among the tofu and soggy veggies.

A buddy of mine still refers to it as the last 'Dodge City' online.

tammix 01-27-2008 11:10 AM

UUencode!!! lol
thats really history, like gopher!
;-)

Yeppa - the daze of Cshow, Telix and Bluewave and that funny squealing noise from the box.

posts can be canceled but some servers do not accept cancels so they possibly can not be removed from all the servers

Babaganoosh 01-27-2008 12:42 PM

God I used to love newsgroups. Downloading a .jpg while I made dinner and took a nap was awesome.

But they knew it just about 5-10 years ago. Newsgroups were popular those times.

P.CUBENSIS=D 01-27-2008 03:24 PM

alt.binaries.erotica is just one of thousands of other groups with porn too....
