fading/opacity image effect? is javascript the only way?

i've seen the fancing little image fade used for thumbs on a few tgps before and was thinking of throwing a similiar effect onto a design i'm working with right now. i did a little google and all i can seem to find is a little javascript which handle sit. is this the only way, or is there a way i can go about doing it with pure css? also curious what browsers these effects are compatible with. any hints are appreciated, thanks.
