Ron Paul gets elected and we pull out the next day. What happens in Iraq?

It would be all good for a while, then I think the country would completely fall apart and they would come back to us to fix it, which we would like we have after every other conflict we were involved in.

Regardless as to what happens, the middle east will continue to be a troubled part of the world.

edit: That or another crazy dictator moves in while the country is trying to rebuild and we get to do this all over again in 15 or 20 years.

All hell would break loose but the aftermath of a few months will have them all seeking an end to the fighting. Iran and Syria would organized talks and because they actually understand the local issue (of which we have no clue) a agreement would come forth.

The real problem right now is actually the survival of Pakistan. If that government collapses the US will move in and the fighting will be bigger than ever with little chance of a clear victory.

Chaos, 100%. Saddam kept everyone from killing each other. The US is now in his place. Unless they put someone ELSE in charge, it will be a free for all and the entire country will destroy itself. I don't think anyone could really challenge that.

I dont know why the Iraqi's voice isn't heard on my news *shrug*. Do they want us there or not? I dont even fucking know anymore. Does anyone in their "government" even speak for the people? .. who knows.

If the US pulled out that government would be destroyed in 2 weeks and it would actually be a good thing. This gov can't control a single aspect of the fighting. They can't call a cease fire to any group, not even to the US side that is propping them up.

I figured as much.. a real definitive puppet government.. it's how old school US foreign policy worked.. but times they are a changin'. It's pretty transparent to even a casual observer these days.

Iraq becomes the new Afghanistan. And the world that hates us for going in will hate us even more for leaving.

I wouldn't neccessarily say less people would die, it might just be different people or just less people now and more later.

Basically, if we just backed out now, the country would completely implode and one of the neighboring countries would come in to take control and we would end up right back in there.

In short, the answer is its all fucked either way.

Okay, soldier "A" . spent just enough extra fun time in IRAQ ( pronounced "eeerock" now ...) to watch his buddies head explode like a ripe watermelon at target practice. Maybe he loses a limb because he gets to hangout another year. Soldier "A" isn't coming home intact mentally/physically. He has a higher risk of becoming homeless. Multiply that by thousands. It's no secret Veterans aren't treated very well.

So he has a better chance at avoiding this shit if he's at home. Thus decreasing the homeless population and all the other fun shit that comes with it like post traumatic stress disorder. I don't know the odds but it seems like common sense to me ...

Another despot, like Saddam, would eventually come to power. We'd save money and lives. Essentially everything would go back to the way it was prior to the invasion. We might as well have left it that way to begin with.
