Whatever happened to the anti MSG craze?

Seriously the only people that still point out no MSG is Chinese food places. Yet it is in all sorts of stuff people eat every single day and nobody is having any issues with that.

I gave this some serious thought while at the store today and bought myself my first can of Accent Flavor Enhancer, which the last time I had it was when my grandparents made fried chicken.

tical 01-22-2008 12:08 AM

doritos have it!

stickyfingerz 01-22-2008 12:15 AM

No. Unlike those items that we should probably pay attention to, the MSG-scare is, generally speaking, a crock.

MSG's only shown to be potentially harmful to small children - hence why it was yanked outta baby foods 20 years ago.

In a condensed form, it's thought to be a mild neurotoxin... creating headaches, etc... but those results were never conclusively duplicated in a lab setting, insofar as I recollect.

Deforestation, ozone destruction due to CFC's, Global Warming, Impending Ice Ages (spurred on, in fact, by Global Warming), and Soil Erosion concerns all have a firm scientific and factual basis, and should be something that we all consider as we progress technologically, imho.

Enemator 01-22-2008 12:55 AM

People grew tired of the scare....

Nookster 01-22-2008 01:37 AM

Last time I checked I have serious issues with MSG. That's why you'll notice most places still do list it. IT'S THE LAW.

Really now?

Is it actually a law?

I have yet to see a sign above the ranch dressing at the local salad bars and other restaurants. Then you have about 7 or more items at McDonalds, 9 or 10 at burger king, about everything at kfc, taco bell, all of campbells and progresso's soups, worcestershire sauce, most kraft products and well I could go on and on.

I looked it up.

There are no regulations
for labeling
processed free glutamic acid (MSG)

IN A NUTSHELL

There are no regulations that require the identification (labeling) of all processed free glutamic acid (MSG) present in processed food.

The FDA has proposed no regulations for identifying all processed free glutamic acid (MSG) in processed food.

Never has the FDA suggested that all MSG in processed food might be labeled.

I am just more interested in what happened to the rabbid craze that was going on that to this day has scared every Asian into placing notices in their phone book ads and signs in their windows saying no MSG used. Specially since just about every other damn place people eat at uses it.

cherrylula 01-22-2008 05:03 PM

Look at the ingredients in gum and candy by the checkout. You can barely find ANY that doesn't have aspartame or some artificial sweetener in it, even the not sugar free stuff! They use artificial sweeteners in everything now too, even regular sugary gum. Aspartame is terrible and all that artificial stuff gives me heartburn so I avoid it. But you can't even get a good pack of sugary sweet gum anymore without artificial sweeteners. Breath mints too. I think altoids are about the only thing, if you don't mind the horse hoof gelatin they are made with.

Companies that make that stuff must figure if you are already eating things bad for you, you won't notice anyways. People never read ingredients.

RedShoe 01-22-2008 05:05 PM

MSG craze got replaced with the TRANS FAT craze, soon to be replaced with the HFCS craze.

tony286 01-22-2008 08:19 PM

msg gives me headaches. Ever hear of that chinese rap group runmsg. You listen to their music and a hour later you want to listen to it again. lol

Jim_Gunn 01-22-2008 08:29 PM

The MSG scare in the media mostly died down because most restaurants stopped using it unless you go to a really crappy Chinese food place in a small town somewhere. Of course, if you eat healthy home cooked food daily instead of eating out all the time at fast food places and shitty local restaurants and eating pre-packaged processed crap food from the grocery store, you can pretty easily read the nutrition labels and avoid MSG, HFCS and all the other poisons, and overdoses of salt and other natural substances that will make you fat, bloated, tired and feel like shit.

Monosodium glutamate is in fact neurotoxic, specifically to regions of the brain in which no blood-brain barrier exists.

Absence of a headache does not indicate "immunity".

Most restaurants still serve ranch or they would be out of business by now. A restuarant without ranch is almost like a porn site without nudity.

Then it naturally pops up in parmesian cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, nuts, dairy, soy, corn, barley, yeast, and of course any produce that was sprayed with Auxigro while it was growing.

I have never eaten "ranch" anything in my life, nor would I, although I understand it is a popular so-called flavor for salad dressing and doritos. I wouldn't worry about anything occurring in a tomato or a nut or any other non-processed foodstuff. A good rule of thumb to live by is that if something doesn't grow in nature or doesn't eat stuff that grows, then don't put it in your mouth.

MSG works great on jellyfish stings. Growing up in FL we always kept a shaker of Accent in the beach bag. Better than having someone pee on you :)
