how can i change linux charset?

I have a file with french text.
When i open the file on my computer with notepad i see the text ok, but if i upload the file to my linux dedicated server and i open the file from comand line with "vi file.txt" i see some strange characters: insead é i see é, instead à i see Ã, instead û i see û and so on..

i guess the problem is from some charset settings.. but i don't know how to change the linux charset setting
anybody know what is the problem and how can i fix-it?

thanks

Try to open with nano and then see results.
