wtf computer wont start (not even a beep on startup)

ok my wires were really messy inside my computer so i decided to screw some things in a bit tighter and clean it up

now my computer wont boot up at all.. i dont even hear a beep so i can look up beep error codes or something

i see all the fans powering up, i see my video card fan power up, when my monitor cable is hooked up to my video card i dont see 'signal cable not connected!' on my monitor.. and yet when i turn on my pc my monitor stays black and the light on yellow.

any ideas whats wrong?

PS: before my computer crashed, i remember that if i turned on my pc with the video card plugged in but the power to it disconnected, id hear 2 quick beeps.

now if i do that i still hear nothing.

I doubt this is it, since you said you were knocking about some wires, but reset your cmos first. If you don't know how, look it up...there's tons of articles. very easy, and just requires a tweezer(or very tiny fingers).

maybe you knocked loose an SATA cable(they come out way too easily)

Maybe the vid card isn't seated.

maybe the power supply is bad...but it would be a major coincidence that it went bad as you were fiddling around in the case. It's more likely that you have knocked something crucial loose.

it may be your video card try to plug it again properly :) i hope this work

BuggyG 01-18-2008 07:37 AM

screwing things in prolly shorted something ur motherboard out.if you happen to touch the board with screwdriver or screw with nothing between it and motherboard. am no tech so can't really say. but could be a possibility

Myst 01-18-2008 07:39 AM

some more info:
i unplugged almost everything from my motherboard, started up, no beep.

my motherboard seems to be supplying power to my cpu fan, and the little green light on the motherboard is on.. so i dont know if thats the problem

Did you take out your ram and not plug them back in correctly?

It's a wildcard, but try taking the video card out and having a good blow on the AGP/PCI-E connector to blow out any dust which may have gathered there while you were cleaning the innards.

It might not work for you, but it did once work for me on an old PowerMac I bought.

Just check each power cable that leads away from the power supply. Something may look like it's snug and it's not. If anything is loose and making contact with the case then you won't start either as the power supply won't allow a short within itself, typically.

You probably short circuited the board..nothing shows up on your screen?
Do you see the hdd led start flashing after a few seconds? If not but you
hear the disk spinning....most likely your mainboard is fucked....

Nismo 01-18-2008 08:49 AM

did you take everything out and plug it back in the same way?

looks like what is said above ....

mike-al 01-18-2008 09:56 AM

remove everythign, reseed the power supply to the mobo.... power for leds is simple, might not have enough power to boot though, which means the p/s died or perhaps shorted (leave it off for a hour and retry)

Myst 01-18-2008 10:29 AM

went to a computer store and they got it fixed
for future reference: this was fixed by removing everything (mobo too) and inserting everything from scratch. the guy said it might have been something to do with 'short chip' (i cant remember if thats the name) - where heating/cooling cycles causes the cpu to temporarily fuck up

Brad 01-18-2008 10:31 AM

go back to the beginning and replug everything in. did you unplug the power when you were tightening all the connections? That could have had an effect. But I'd say just take it apart and put it back together, that should work.

Violetta 01-18-2008 10:46 AM

I had that problem once... I had bent one of those TINY pins on the cpu

thricer 01-18-2008 10:49 AM

throw it away and buy a new one
