Pics and a video for the few NASCAR fans

I know there isn't very many NASCAR fans here but I thought I'd post a few pics and a video I took at the last test session for the few that like it.

The video is pretty simple as I just wanted to get the speed and sound of the cars. It's hard to take video AND pictures at the same time and try not to miss anything but I did the best I could in the time I had.

Here's some pics of the testing including Dale Earnhardt Jr. in his new #88, Kasey Kahne in his new Budweiser #9 and I'm throwing in a spectator from another day at the track for those that don't care about NASCAR but came in here anyways :winkwink:

With open wheel drivers like Dario Franchitti, Patrick Carpentier, Sam Hornish Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya and Jacques Villeneuve coming over to NASCAR it's only a matter of time before we get Schumacher :1orglaugh

I'd love to photograph an F1 race but I don't get much of a chance here in the US

Always love your pix!!! Very nice shots... :thumbsup

What camera and lens set-up, and camera settings, do you use to freeze the cars but give the appearance of motion in the background? Is it just a depth of field thing?

Tony looks charming as usual lol

Thanks!

I'm using a Canon 20D with a Canon 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4 extender.

If you use a fast shutter speed ( 1/500 sec or faster ) it will freeze the car and it looks parked on the track. It's a much more dramatic to give it the feel of motion and speed by slowing down the shutter speed to at least 1/125 sec. This will blur the tires and wheels so you know the car is moving.

As the car drives past you pan the camera and take the picture when the car is directly perpendicular to your position. This is important because if it's coming towards you or driving away the car won't be sharp. You have to catch it at the moment it's right in front of you to get the best results.

It also helps to follow through with your pan even after taking the pic as this makes for a much smoother motion with better results.

I've tried going as slow as 1/30 sec which is what I used to get the pic of the #5 Porsche below which has a different look to it but the success rate goes waaaay down at that speed. I've found 1/125 works the best.

The last element in the picture is composition. If you can find something that looks pleasing when blurred it can really add to the look of the picture. In the NASCAR pictures I tried to incorporate the Daytona Lettering on the wall to help identify the location.

When you get one right it's a nice shot but you'll miss quite a few as well. Technique and practice will improve your odds.

The only F1 drivers that go to NASCAR are ones that have retired or people who didn't ever make it/weren't good enough. (Montoya got fired and Villeneuve wasn't good enough so no team would take him.)

But NASCAR is pretty fun to watch because of the crashes. :thumbsup:1orglaugh

Jacques Villeneuve was the 1997 F1 Champion. Montoyoa has a very impressive resume.

NASCAR is too competitive, too popular and too lucrative for ANY driver to ignore.

It's funny to watch the people in the theater when that scene from the IMAX movie
where the wheel comes flying right at the camera pops up because everyone instinctively ducks :1orglaugh

Did you get to see it with the full head gear as well? We saw it and was blown away by the sound. Amazing.

Villeneuve only JUST won the 97 championship in a car that was far far far superior to anyone elses, and he still almost lost. From that season on he just fell into oblivion because he couldn't handle it. Montoya was fast but only is at NASCAR because he was fired from F1, if he had the choice he would go back.

NASCAR is alright though if i see it on eurosport while im flickin through ill watch it :D
