My Netflix is empty. Recommendations?

Maybe some good Indies? But anything, really.

camgirlshide 01-17-2008 06:11 AM

recommendation: cancel netflix and switch to one of those $1/night rental machines at the supermarket.

RomaCash 01-17-2008 06:15 AM

Ones I have liked lately
3:10 to Yuma
The Kingdom
Eastern Promises
Stardust
The Namesake

and this is a really good double feature: Watch Rescue Dawn with Christian Bale and then watch the documentary of the real man in Little Dieter Needs to Fly.

Bossman 01-17-2008 07:55 AM

A few foreign language films I have recently enjoyed:

The Green Butchers - http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Gre...chers/70031776

Ten Canoes - http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Ten_Can...0&trkid=129129

The Lives of Others - http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Liv...thers/70056425

bronco67 01-17-2008 07:56 AM

Sunshine -- the last ten minutes of this flick will steam clean your mind.

The Kingdom -- got no love last year, but it ain't too shabby. Slowly builds to a crazy last 30 minutes.

Once

The Dead Girl

[email protected] <-- NOT my netflix email address

WarChild 01-17-2008 08:21 AM

City of God
Kingdom of God
Repo Man
The Drugstore Cowboy
Requiem For a Dream

Sarah_Jayne 01-17-2008 08:32 AM

I don't think I will ever get to the bottom of my blockbuster dvd by post list.

Ever seen 'The Dish'? It is a sleepy type paced film from Australia about their role in the broadcasting of the first man on the moon. It is gentle but funny and I liked it.

Babaganoosh 01-17-2008 09:17 AM

Fido - A great, cheesy zombie movie.

It takes place after the zombie war. A scientist figures out how to tame zombies via an electronic collar so now everyone owns zombie pets/slaves.

someguy11 01-17-2008 09:20 AM

the lives of others, half nelson, amelie, lost in translation... and if you want to go to the movies you have to see "no country for old men"

also heard "there will be blood" is good too.

There Will be Blood is great. Even better than No country, I thought.

Nope :) Wait for the scene where the teenage Australians are told to play the American anthem. Made me giggle.

RomaCash 01-18-2008 04:07 AM

also Resident Evel III with Mila.

Visitor Q

ADL Colin 01-18-2008 05:03 AM

This is great. I have 20 new movies. Netflix recommendations suck. GFY recommendations look pretty good.

Sarah_Jayne 01-18-2008 05:15 AM

Now, remember to report back..part of the fun of recommending things is to see if people liked them or not.

This is a little late but I remember a lot of GFYers recommended "Red violin" quite a few years back. Didn't do anything for me at all.

uno 01-18-2008 06:22 AM

If you enjoy it then be sure to check out the entire catalogue of films by Takashi Miike. They are a bit hit and miss, but definitely crazy stuff!

You'll either completely love it or completely hate it, there is really no middle ground for Visitor Q. I was in the love it camp, haha

I would recommend
Battle Royale
Cocaine Cowboys (the documentary, not the cheese-fest from 1979 ;-))
Thank You For Smoking
Children of Men
Ichi The Killer
Gummo (warning: extremely artsy fartsy, another of those you'll love it or totally hate it type movies)

SCOOTER 01-18-2008 04:21 PM

Time to contact old friends - you crazy fucker !!
