FACT: Conventions = shit

They've lost their usefulness years ago. Too much much of a party, too little biz.

munki 01-12-2008 07:29 PM

I have to disagree...

Coming from somehow who is much newer to the industry then a lot of people here, the conventions have been a huge help with my getting my products out there, and meeting like minded people... granted I may not still feel the same way in a few years, it is what you make of it...

I walk away from every show with a fair amount of business done.

L-Pink 01-12-2008 07:29 PM

Wife made you stay home didn't she?

Actually no. I stopped going to them years ago.

tony286 01-12-2008 07:30 PM

its funny we are a net industry but still need to meet face to face.

CyberHustler 01-12-2008 07:32 PM

I've never gone to one... If I did it would probably be more for the partying than business.

Jim_Gunn 01-12-2008 07:36 PM

Conventions are always great for me. I did a lot of business at AEE this year with movie production and a new movie distribution deal and I expect to accomplish some big things at Internext also.

For veterans of any industry conventions tend to become less and less important. :2 cents:

seeric 01-12-2008 07:39 PM

whats wrong with parties?

goddamnit i work hard to go to shows and party my ass off.

lollllll

cybermike 01-12-2008 07:45 PM

they are fun.. phx is great

Nardimus 01-12-2008 08:36 PM

have you seen the photos from conventions? it's the same 10 or 20 people in every pic at every show. looks worthless.

Robbie 01-12-2008 08:44 PM

I stopped going in 2002... only because I had other shit to do. But I'm here now, and having a great time. I went to the show at the Hard Rock in August and then in Amsterdam in October, between the two I did over a million dollars worth of business. :) Plus I had a blast! Gonna do the same thing here at Internext. It's always fun to see people I've done biz with for the last decade. And good to plot and scheme new ways to make money with them. Plus, I really like a lot of them and it's just plain fun.

StuartD 01-12-2008 09:13 PM

And how many do you attend each year to be basing this thread off of?

Phil 01-12-2008 09:19 PM

Twinkies not sponsoring this year? is that why you're staying Sumo?

V_RocKs 01-12-2008 09:26 PM

It is a great way to see 20 people you need to see in 3 days time.

But yeah... Sometimes the party aspect gets in the way. Especially when people party till the sun comes up, miss the show floor and then don't show up for the next parties until 10pm... Makes it hard to do business with someone when they cannot put business before pleasure.

fatfoo 01-12-2008 09:33 PM

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

Damian_Maxcash 01-12-2008 09:36 PM

I cant get to Vegas but I am going to XBiz - Its going to be hard not to party too much.

I can see me dragging my ass to the floors with a major hangover - I think I will have to be careful and then blow out big time on the last night.

I've been to enough over the years. I've seen the decline in quality. That is why I stopped. You see I am not just some gfy... been around when longer then that.

Yet, still clueless.

Not to sound cliche, but conventions now like before, are what you make of them.

I go to more mainstream than adult (and I do a lot of adult), but I never regret going to one, or come away feeling it was a waste.

But then, I don't feel the need to party until dawn, or drink myself into a condition that I won't remember what I said the night before. So your results may vary.

You sure about that idiot? I remember someone back in the day telling another someone that they were going to kick my ass. I also remember someone telling me they could smell the booze off of you a mile away.

Go get your crutches ready for the big picture taking with hot chicks to make yourself feel cool event fucktard.

I'm being an asshole by stating my opinion of the conventions? I don't think so.

That would be a good trick, especially since the convention in question I drove to Vegas for the day and drove back that night.

You would have trouble finding someone that has ever seen me drunk.

'Flip Flopping'?

I made it clear I didnt like you over 5 years ago when I first came to GFY.

I would call that consistant....

If you think I wont last at MC because I dont like you, you are very WRONG.

amacontent 01-12-2008 10:33 PM

TOTALLY DISAGREE.. you have to know how to correctly work a convention.. thats all. Im in bed at 1030pm everynight during a show and I get the most out of it.

Thats gonna be so hard - How much would you charge for putting me to bed at 10:30 every night?

I will kick and scream but thank you in the morning :)

Sex isnt compulsory but if I am in Hollywood and not getting any I will be horny as hell....

Casa Nova 01-12-2008 10:46 PM

drama........?

Sosa 01-12-2008 11:06 PM

I haven't attended a convention adult or mainstream yet, but I would think all it takes is learning one thing, or making one deal to make the entire trip a positive. Sure there will be parties, but you can still get some business done I can imagine before parties. And not everyone is into the big club scene so you can do other things during those times.

PersianKitty 01-12-2008 11:09 PM

Well.. ask me how I feel about conventions on Wednesday.

I'm sitting at the Palms on the eve of my first. I don't drink much (won't here), don't party much, don't do drugs, don't do women. Either I'll get alot of business done and put faces with names of people I've talked to online for years OR I'll be extremely bored.

PK

I agree. It's what your intentions are when you go. I attend a lot of mainstream ones as well and they can be useful or not useful based on your objectives. If you go looking to strictly do business, don't get caught up in the party scene, and play the game right, a show can put you in touch with great people.

But it's also not for everyone. There are a lot of guys who have made millions and never been to an adult show (as well as vice versa). I think those who think they are useless are basing it on the fact that they see a lot of people going who really don't need to go and just want to party.

All above preciscely why I stay at home here... :)

fuzebox 01-12-2008 11:56 PM

I do my business over ICQ, and go to conventions for the parties :)

There is huge value in a face-to-face introduction though.

I believe it was sarcasm.

Hope to see you soon.

Rochard 01-13-2008 03:56 AM

I disagree. Conventions can be highly productive. Even though we work on the net, it's good to meet face to face. It makes current projects stronger, and people you meet face to face instead of ICQ for the first time.

The truth is to treat it the proper manner. Conventions can be fun but only if you can do both work and fun. I remember working for Lightspeed Cash during the Florida Internext, partying all night, sobering up, and opening up the booth at 9am.

I see. So you stopped at some point because you weren't getting much out of them. And then decided to wait for a while and then make this broad statement for the rest of the industry on their behalf.

Sounds logical.

Ummmm wrongo.

I stopped a while ago and started saying at that point conventions have become shit because of the parties.

So yes, it does sound logical.

And you are an authority on what conventions are today because you stopped going a while ago?

That sounds logical to you?
