I have a question about virtual hosting

I was just reading an article that compared dedicated to virtual hosting, and came upon something I was not aware of. Truth be told, I have no idea if it is typical or accurate as I have never had a virtual account.

The article suggested that most hosts do not offer a control panel. In fact, if you want to add or remove a domain, you have to go thru the host. Is that the norm?

All my hosting is dedicated but from what I understand with a lot of hosts is they don't offer a control panel as part of the standard features. Some will offer it as an upgrade for an additional fee.

I've had hosts like that in the past but long long ago.

The only reason a person might see that as a plus is if they have no wm or admin skills and want the hosting company to do it for them so they can just run their business.

I don't think they were suggesting it was a plus, just a difference between dedicated and virtual.

i don't have an admin panel or anything on natnet. I didn't have one on phatservers either.

Charge for what, the panel or to add domains?

And to our clients, no worries, I am not going to start charging. :1orglaugh

I have a few virtual accounts with Host Gator, all of them have cpanel, and they don't charge me extra for it...

on blackseven (way back) and then on phatservers, both my virtual accounts had control panels (first cpanel and then directadmin), but some functionality was limited, for example you can add domains and subdomains, but they have to manipulate the zone files and whatever other dns they do to make them resolve properly.

With dedicated, its full DA, but they still do the actual dns work once you setup the domain in the control panel.

Webair is the same. They have a great cp.

So I guess the consensus is that this must be an old article, or the guy hasn't had virtual in a while.

Thank you. That is what I was leaning towards myself, which is why I started this thread.

And who says you can't discuss relevant subjects on GFY?

Most virtual hosts provide an admin control panel for free these days. They will charge you a fee if you don't know how to add a domain or to set up the account.

That is how they can bill out 4.95 per month prepaid for a year (radom guess of pricing). Things have changed...with cheap virtual hostings there is no tech included.

Good deal if you know the in and outs of hosting and a really bad deal if you don't :)

HorseShit 02-21-2009 12:17 PM

yup, sure.

Machete_ 02-21-2009 12:26 PM

All our virtual have a control panel included. I have been here since 1997-8, and so far havent seen a hostingaccount without a Controlpanel.

The only server I have ever used that dident have one, was those at FlyingCroc, but they replied to email faster than I could type them anyway, so that wasent a problem

No... oh my virtual box, I can add and remove domains as much as I want, when I want.

However, REMOVING the root directory from the old domain is something I need to open a ticket for. :2 cents:

i.e. /var/www/domain.com/

Supz 02-21-2009 02:07 PM

i havent seen a virtual come without a control panel, dedicated it is usually an option.

marcjacob 02-21-2009 02:36 PM

Every virtual Ive had has had a cpanel. But I looked for that and wouldnt join otherwise.
