1080p, 1080i, 760p... im lost.. whats the best shit?

someone help me out here...

Ice 01-07-2008 03:05 PM

1080p is the best but you only need it if your media supports it.. blu-ray or hd-dvd for example.

You can save money on a tv if you go with 1080i/720p

Star 69 01-07-2008 03:06 PM

1080p - mean progressive is the best. ICE is totally right BTW

_Richard_ 01-07-2008 03:07 PM

p means progressive

i means interlaced

brand0n 01-07-2008 03:10 PM

ok.. now is LG better then Hitachi?

whats the names i should be lookin for here?

jact 01-07-2008 03:10 PM

I upgraded from a 1080i to a 1080p and it actually makes a lot of difference.. IMO (Yes my source media supports p)

I picked up a 55" Hitachi plasma a few months ago and love it. IMO LG and Samsung are great but a bit overpriced

Best thing to do is go to the store and buy what your eyes like. I looked at about 30 tv's before I bought mine.

JakeR 01-07-2008 03:18 PM

lg blows
check out the sony bravia xbr4/5 lcd

That's totally what I do. Hard to make recommendations otherwise.

2MuchMark 01-07-2008 03:22 PM

1080p is the highest you can get for now. 1080 is the # of lines the TV can display, and "i" or "p" is how those lines are displayed (i for Interlaced, p for Progressive). Interlaced images flicker like old TV's do, but Progressive screens are steady (like your PC's screen).

Progressive requires better, faster components, so its more expensive.

Interlaced TV's are now pretty hard to find as the prices have dropped below $800 for a 40". Don't bother saving money - pay a little more, and get the best.

You can only see 1080 content if you have HD channels, and you can only see 1080p content if you have a Blu Ray or HD DVD DVD Player. In addition to that, you MUST use an HDMI connection.

HDMI is a new standard. It uses all digital signals for video and audio, and includes extra data that TV's, DVD's, HD Recorders, and Sound processors use. By pressing "DVD" on your remote, the HDMI signal "networks" your various components together, telling all of them that you are going to watch a DVD. So it can set the TV to preset "cinema" levels, and tell your sound processor to swith to enable THX, and switch the sound format to Dolby Digital 5.1, all with 1 click.

FUN!

what i want is someone to come out with an HD DVR

It should have 500GB drive and play all HD formats (H.264, DIVX, etc) AND it should have wifi built in so it looks like a media storage device to my LAN

now git to it

dready 01-07-2008 03:53 PM

Samsung is always nice.

sin2oh 01-07-2008 04:02 PM

http://blogs.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-51...xt#resolutions

the general rule about asian mfr:

Tier 1 - Japanese (highest quality, generally more expensive)
Tier 2 - S. Korean (Samsung, LG (BTW these two are the largest mfr's of the raw screens in the world. almost everyone but the japanese use samsung and lg product).
Tier 3 - crap from taiwan and china.

I went rear-projection Mitsubishi but I have the space for it. I still here negative reports about lifetime of lcds and plasmas. And, you can save a lot of money for better specs, bigger screen size with rear-projection vs. flat panel.

I used to sell TV's in the early 90's and we'd make sure the sets with the highest commissions would look the best, by adjusting contrast and hue and those sorts of things.

So be careful.

Go to CES I bet someone has it. I know that the guys making the guts of the set-tops are all integrating wifi/wimax. one of my clients is working on a new standard based on W-USB. will send 7.1 surround sound wirelessly)

I bought a 50 inch Philips just before Christmas and I love it. Its not 1080p but for me I don't need a Full HD tv yet. I have a PS3 linked to it and a upscaling DVD cinema system and the picture is just perfect. Call of Duty on PS3 blew me away.

In principle i agree...but you not only have to look at the tv but aloso check the settings..you would be amazed how the expensive tvs are all set perfect while the lower price models are slightly out of tune or brightness..best buy and curcit city use these methods:2 cents:

1080p is the best picture..BUT..most cable/sattelite providors dont broadcast the 1080p signal yet..they run 1080i ...meaning even if you break out the extra $500-1k on the 1080p it wont matter because it will still only show in 1080i....But.. blue ray dvd looks better ..and eventually all the providors will broadcast in 1080p...BUT..by that time im sure there will be an even higher number thats the "new best picuture out there" ...

As far as TV's

here is what the DEA reccomends:

High liighting in room :

1080p lcd sharp aquos
1080i lcd sharp aquos
1080 lcd sony bravia
1080i LG lcd

Lower lit rooms:
1080p samsung plasma
1080i samsung plasma

seriously consider the lcd if you have alot of natrual lite in the room or the glare on your tv will piss you off :2 cents:

i am rockin a 60 inch vizio 1080i plasma in the living room and a Samsung 50 in plasma in the bedroom :thumbsup

Are you fucking me? Samsung is poo-poo and I wouldn't use that to even jerk off too. :jerkoff

You want Sony xbr4 or 5 (if you need that 232 shoot).
Now you can rub one out to a picture on that easily!:winkwink:

I have this Mitsubishi - DLP Home Theater Projector 720p and have a 106" 16:9 fixed frame with a playstation 3 blue ray player. I opted for the high end monster cables HDMI just cause I didn't wanna wonder if better cables would look better

I know it's not 1080p but for a 106" picture with blue ray it still looks amazing.

What kind of tv do you have?

Cash 01-07-2008 05:41 PM

1080p is the best

GatorB 01-07-2008 05:41 PM

1080P is the best. People will argue between 1080i or 720p as 2nd best. Fact is if your screen is under 50 inches and/or you sit more than 2 times the length of the diagonal on your TV then you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. Even if you do sit close and have a huge TV even the lighting conditions can make it where you can tell the difference. Also no one broadcasts any content in 1080p.

That would help if they are set right. the local wal-amrt has some of the TVs set properly some of them are not set at 16:9 and so the picture is stretched thus affecting the picture quality. That TV may in fact have a better picture, but how can you can when it's not set right. Also some are showing SD content while other show HD content. Once again how can you tell anything? Also some are hooked up by composite which means the content won't even be in HD even if the content is HD and some are hooked up by component.

They should pay me to set their TVs correctly. They might actually sell more if they were set correctly.

Gerco 01-07-2008 06:20 PM

bought a samsung 1080p 47 inch lcd.... wow. You could seriously replace your old computer monitor with it.
