2008 Photothread: Belgium, Germany, Holland & France [photos]

Well, new years was fun.
We strapped our nuts to our ears to face the cold, and hit up Belgium, Germany and Holland to go and find somewhere fun.

I've got a stack of snaps, I'll post them as I go, and the best will be saved for last :D

Before we left, a snap or two of Paris and of a friendly windmill :)

A small stop off in Belgium for an abandoned Castle...

More to follow shortly, including: a nazi run euthenasia school, paris train tunnels, and a dive into the coveted paris canal saint martin....

cool ! but pay attention on taking night-pics of the eiffeltower ( there is a copyright on the illumination !!):disgust

Q : Is the publishing of a photo of the Eiffel Tower permitted?
A : There are no restrictions on publishing a picture of the Tower by day. Photos taken at night when the lights are aglow are subjected to copyright laws, and fees for the right to publish must be paid to the SETE.

Rui 01-05-2008 07:28 AM

Brutal...you should put together all the photos you put here (and then some more) :)

Living the life! ;)

If you look at his other photos you will see that he goes behiond the "public allowed" (and I for one I'm glad he does!)

Interesting, I'd heard it, but never read of it.
Alternatively, I'm probably not meant to be in train tunnels either ;)

remii 01-05-2008 07:32 AM

further reading indicates that it's fine to publish these photos in the USA, Ireland, Germany, and probably many more
"# ^ In the United States, for example, 17 USC 120(a) explicitly permits the publication of photographs of copyrighted architecture in public spaces. In Germany this is known as Panoramafreiheit."

remii 01-05-2008 07:41 AM

I'm from austria and we have also the "panoramafreiheit" but some buildings don't go with it:( In germany you are never allowed to publish the eiffeltower by night !

quantum-x - Have you ever considered writing a book about this, starting a blog or even do some "small trips" for people interested in the subject but "green"? :)

Either way, the blog idea above is a good one.

I've started piecing together a website for all the stuff.. work in progress, check http://quantum-x.ice.org/episodes/

Takes a lot of effort and I get bored easily ;)

Problem w/ taking people to places like this is almost exclusively liability. I show someone a train tunnel, they step on a live rail, and I'm fucked. I can handle getting myself killed, but not others :D

Thanks :) You know, 90% of photography has nothing to do with the camera you shoot on ;)

I shoot a lot on this very dodgy antique russian point and pray

Exactly. It's never fun when someone breaks a leg, needs stitches, or doesn't understand the severity of the situation they are in.

Dirty Lord 01-05-2008 03:44 PM

Awesome pics, mate!!! :thumbsup
But........ there´s any women in these contries??? hehehe

Dirty F 01-05-2008 03:46 PM

I have no fucking clue how you manage to take these kind of pics. And i'm talking about the colors and such.

OzMan 01-05-2008 03:49 PM

awesome as usual, great inspiration to get out from behind the desk more often :thumbsup

quantum-x 01-05-2008 04:37 PM

I must admit, I cheated for the first time ever with the castle shot and HDR'd it ;) Shooting into a sunset on a grey day makes for a bastard ;)

RE: Shooting? Normally before I shoot I walk around the place and work out which shots I want to take, and then just go and take them. For 'still life' photography, it's very easy to 'frame' all the photos in your head before you shoot, so you generally know that what you shoot is going to look ok :)
