what % of internet surfers have a dynamic IP?

just wondering what the numbers are

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 01-03-2008 05:06 AM

It's very high like around 90+% polish_aristocrat

.

Klen 01-03-2008 05:18 AM

99% more likely beacuse most of surfers if they want to have fixed ip adress they need to order it.

very high? I thought internet connections with dynamic IP's are not that common

if 90% of people had a dynamic IP, then why would epassporte recognize your PC by IP and not by cookies? (their new security feature)
or why would sites like megarotic have a limit of 4 videos per day per IP?
or why would people scream on GFY "ban that guy's IP", making it sound like he won't be able to ever use GFY again that way?

so I was under the impression most surfers have a static IP, the same every day

poll shows that more people (at least GFY'ers) have a static IP

tranza 01-03-2008 06:50 AM

I have 8 different internet connections (6 at my office and 2 at home), and ALL of them are dynamic.

A poll based on 10 voters ? Do you think it is representative ?

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 01-03-2008 07:05 AM

Just my thoughts...

Nope polish_aristocrat!,

Dynamic IP connections are the standard, If you run a webserver you can check to see the individual IP addresses and follow with a IP check. Also there are many thousands of webmasters who use their dynamic IP with a 3rd party DNS online service as to host their own webserver(s) at home instead of getting a static IP and running name server for themselves. For example a free DNS service: http://freedns.afraid.org/

Domain name (whoever is hosting) will allow you to point your domain name to name servers... example: ns1.anycompany.com ns2.anycompany.com

Now the 3rd party site just needs to know your domain name and for you to run a windows update script that contacts the 3rd party online service as to keep pointing back to your webserver with its changing IP. Remember to use its name servers.

DSL and even cable are not static unless you ask for a static IP and that can cost a lot! If I remember right such is 4 to 5 time the price of a dynamic IP.

I cannot answer the below questions,

"if 90% of people had a dynamic IP, then why would epassporte recognize your PC by IP and not by cookies? (their new security feature)
or why would sites like megarotic have a limit of 4 videos per day per IP?

I am guessing being admin of a site its easier as to buy a script do to the amount of traffic...

Yea you can ban a IP, however if such is dynamic then you are banning others from accessing your server(s) because the individual(s) do not have exclusive rights to that IP and share such with others.

Now if you ban a IP being static then only that person is banned, but their are ways around banning like using third party services.

Their seems to be many webmasters who think the only way to run a website is with a static IP and the attitude is such that those running such think others will think they are more professional and therefor the proffered company to deal with... also many ISP when they find out you are running a business will force you to get a static IP...

hope this helps a little.

Later,

My IP Spain DSL = static
My IP UK Cable = static
My brothers IP France DSL = changed twice in one year

No extra charges on any of these accounts.

I believe most UK cable accounts now have a static IP

interesting question...

Barefootsies 01-03-2008 09:01 AM

Actually this is wrong.

I worked in telco, and dynamic is not the standard.

Dynamic is seen more in the cable modems then anywhere. Partially because they are on a loop, or ring in the neighborhoods.

Dial up are static. DSL can be static. Think of them more as a point to point on a copper pair. So start by looking at how many dial up users you have.

Next, DSL and cable CAN BE static, but, traditionally you have had to pay for them. Now I can't speak to ALL cable or telcoms. But I know here in the midwest, more times than not you have to pay for a static IP unless you are a business.

You can have an IP range, which some confuse with static. Where the last sequence changes.

There are a lot of factors that go into answering this. Some based on the technology you are using to connect, if you are residential or business, and what the provider offers.

Sorry there is no absolute.
:Oh crap
