Aussies - Foxtel warning

No, you and I don't have any choice, but just to let you know, Foxtel compress your digital signal to about 300 lines.

So what? Well, I have a 1080P as of today, and notice the picture is fucking atrocious, and is likely to be for many year's yet. DVD is a little better, but not without upconverting - this seriously smacks of suckass:

Quote:

As for high definition on Foxtel ? YEAH RIGHT !! That will NOT happen for ages - I mean YEARS !!
The reason is this: If they don't have the equipment to broadcast their current broadcasting without compressing so it fits....then they are nowhere near broadcasting high definition programs. I'll try and explain how far away they are .... what we are watching right now is 576 lines of resolution and that is being compressed to around 300 lines so that it all fits. High definition has 2 main formats, but they mostly refer to the 1080 line version. ! 1080 LINES !!! that's like 3 times more information they need to send than what they are barely capeable of sending now .... we are YEARS away. with the current bandwith (speed) they use to send us stuff....it would be worse than downloading a full movie on a dial-up internet connection. Instead of the 7 second delay in digital broadcasting(the processing time for the box to download your show and play it) , it would be more like waiting 5 hours to watch what's on right now.
:disgust:Oh crap:mad:

Yep, Foxtel's quality is pretty dodgy. Their launch of Foxtel Digital with the "almost view on demand" movies was laughable, why pay $5 for a movie with 5.1 sound when the picture is super crappy? May as well just rent the DVD.

Their package system ensures that most people pay more than they need to, as they may only like one or two channels from each package. Bring on PPV micropayments or a fairer system that allows you to pay per channel, I say.

I'm thinking of getting a second unit and recording a few channels for several days at a time, then suspending the service and munching on the recorded stuff for a few months. I don't really think we're getting $1000+ worth of value in a year from Foxtel.

Well I guess I'm the dickwad for assuming that digital tv comes out at something other than smudgy shit for sports. Seriously, it's no better than a 6 year old analogue set. Repeat, 6 year's old Fucking hopeless.

Sure, new movies and blu-ray will make it (hopefully worthwhile) but all this 1080 hype is just total and utter bullshit worthy of the porn world. in fact I'm thinking of going back into sales.

I presume you're on satellite? I'm not sure if cable has greater bw available...

I have an 86cm CRT (that was "big" a few years ago) and even sitting a couple of metres away it's possible to see blocking. Switch over to "E" and wait for a red carpet promo where there's multiple flashes going off (ie: LOTS of changes from frame to frame, so hard to encode within the allocated bw), it looks absolutely horrible.

I've been shafted so hard by the marketing people that my mouth is loving it with fries.
