Does the Way Google Works Make the Internet Worse?
 

As we all know, a big part of Google's PageRank is how many one-way inbound links you have on other websites aimed at your site that do not have rel="nofollow" on them. Does this practice of Google's leave us with an Internet devoid of true content and instead with 50 billion pages of spam all jockeying for position?

The way the net used to work:

• You watch your stats.
• You see cool site linking to you.
• You check it out.
• You like it.
• You link back to it.

The way the net works now with Google:

• You watch your stats.
• You see cool site linking to you.
• You check it out.
• You like it.
• You check to see if they have rel="nofollow" on the link.
• If they do, you might link them since you ain't getting no page rank anyway. But more likely, you get mad that they 'cheated' you out of PageRank, so you don't link them.
• If they don't, you don't link them (unless they ask) because then you nullify the benefit of the PR being passed to you. And you hope that your link stays up.
• Either way, your visitors never see the most relevant content, because usually sites that link to you without you asking are very similar to yours.
• The only links on your site are to your other sites, sites you have been paid to link to (both of which are probably a spam scheme to increase your PR and/or get rich) or sites that don't link to you.

There is no doubt that the internet is gravitating toward garbageness.

Spamblogs out there that are just random collections of unintelligible keywords.

The blogs and sites that are handwitten are mostly painful to read as the writing style nowadays is more slanted toward making it sound "keyword-optimized" for google than actually writing good readable text.

I was thinking about how the kids growing up nowadays almost all of their reading exposure will be online, so they will be learning and developing almost a 'stilted' version of english literature.

adsense is another thing that is bringing the intelligence levels down.. the mainstream sites that are making the most are generally sites that have very little content that might keep the surfer there. The ad links are disguised as much as possible so half the time when you get to a site like that you can hardly even tell where the actual content is due to all the blended ads.

Not the be all end all, but certainly a major part. Yeah, I know, I have heard all the lines. PR does not matter, blah, blah, blah. But at the end of the day, they do matter, cause Google positions your ass with a heavy weight on PR.

I put the idiots on ignore long ago. They are talking to themselves. Every once in a while I go look at one of their posts to see if they have gotten their heads out of their asses.

Doesn't matter. Regardless of how any search engine determines placement, there will always be a never ending supply of people to manipulate the results. Whatever algorithm they use will be abused in short order.

I have PR1 pages that rank in the first page for very good keywords. Thousands of hits per day from google. :2 cents:

Today everyone wants a link and no one wants to give one out.

So we have shit load of sites with shitty useless links all over (hardlink sales), and we have good sites that have a good site to link to, but they don't.

Me neither. By domains I actually mean two domains. They used to be PR4 and PR5, but dropped to PR1 in the last mix up at the same time climbing the results to page 1 and doubling in traffic. I don't get it myself.
