Hi Myst,

There was a lab that released a detailed speed comparison between XP and Vista, and XP won.

I have 2 machines on my desk, both have identical hardware (Core 2 Duo's, 4GB Ram, etc). The XP machine is much faster.

Vista takes forever to boot up, and Photoshop is very slugish on Vista, but flies and never chokes up on XP.

The only good thing about Vista is that it runs DirectX 10 which makes things like dust, smoke, and other details in games look even better. However you have to look very hard to see the difference, and in fast 1st Person Shooters, you really want higher frame rates, and not necessarily more detail.

Vista will be the future anyway, but its current version, even with the latest patches, is kind of sucky.

FuckingFuck, do this: Buy any laptop you like, and then buy the OEM Version of XP (it's cheaper by at least 50%). FORMAT the hard disk on your new machine and install XP. Why? Because most brand name computer makes load-down their machines with useless software that your machine slows to a crawl. So many programs load up and stay in memory that Windows has no RAM left to do anything so it has to use the hard disk to swap shit out to virtual memory every time you hit a key.

Cheers!

So you are forbidden to buy XP and install it over the other?

Dell's biz series still allow you to chose XP as an option. Cleaner installs too; no spamware, unless you select it.

My mother has just picked up a new laptop with Vista. Its the same spec as my XP laptop and definitely runs slower. It uses over a gig of ram just by the time windows has booted up. Long gone are the days when I could boot a minimal start up with Win 2k and use 72mb of RAM :(

I have bought 3 new computers this year, all had vista preinstalled

all had at least 2gb ram, 120gb hard drive and dual core amd processor....vista was nice at first, but the more the computer was used the worse it got, you couldn't even leave it on for more than 6-8 hours before the system would come to a crawl

XP is SO much faster. I have switched many of my machines back to XP.
