any over/under on whether or not Pakistan will be burning by the end of the night?

Not good. Elsewhere in Pakistan, a few hours earlier, four supporters of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif died when members of another political party opened fire on them at a rally near the Islamabad airport Friday, local police said. Honestly, places like Pakistan are a long way off being able to have an effective democracy in place. Their whole nation is built on tribalism, religious fundamentalism and using violence to take/gain/maintain power. How can you expect something good to result in a democratic ballot from that? Hell, it gets dirty and nasty enough in the West with smear campaigns, attacking TV commercials, supporters abusing each other, etc. Imagine all that in a shithole like Pakistan.

there is always this basic and wrong assumption is that everyone wants peace and democracy and there's just 3-4 assholes fucking it up for the whole country. the reality is that people want to fight, want power and want to rule. the reality is they dont care all that much about reconcilliation as much as they do about making sure that their tribe/clan/ethnic group/religious sect is in the drivers seat for once. everyone loves to think Musharef (sp?) is a thug. why wouldn't he be? what is the alternative? pakistan has always been fucked up and just like we saw in Iraq people care less about "democracy" and change through democracy than they do about just seizing power and having their moment in the sun. the best person to replace saddam hussein, would have been another saddam hussein. who is the best person to replace musharef? some weepy chick accused of pilferring billions of dollars from her own country with a "i have a dream speech" about love and peace in the middle of one of the most turbulent and unstable countries in the middle east? ... not too likely. |

The death of the charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 election into chaos and created fears of mass protests and an eruption of violence across the volatile south Asian nation, which has nuclear weapons and a support base for Muslim extremists. |
