My guess would be:

He didn't know his neighbor had invented it until after he purchased it in Amsterdam
He knew his neighbor had invented it and was excited to find it being sold in Amsterdam

As a pipe smoker, the main problem I see with it is that it can't retain the flavors from past loads smoked in it.

That is the best part about smoking a pipe.
