I still don't believe

Dawgy 09-27-2002 12:44 PM

if that's a true checkerboard they arent... they are in different diagonals, and thus must be different colors

well... if we get technical.... it depends on where you sample it from.... there are a few miniscule places where the shade is not exact. :)

It's with simple puzzles like this where intelligence is measured! :)

Kat - Fast 09-27-2002 12:47 PM

I just played with it in Presentations and they give the same code with the clone and dropper - same shade of grey

I love these threads... You get a chance to see how people manage simple logic.

that's logic getting in the way... as a purely flat image and not a 3D real life checkerboard, yep.... they are the same. The shadow from the green peg thing is the key.... not only does it darken the shade of the "B" checker to match the "A" checker, but it also darkens the surrounding checkers, which is what really throws the eye off.

Penrod 09-27-2002 12:50 PM

They look different on my B&W monitor.

heh... they still look different, don't they? But they are EXACTLY the same. The color is 107/255 for R, G and B. Or #6B6B6B in HTML.

GFED 09-27-2002 12:53 PM

That's a good one Jak! :thumbsup

:1orglaugh He didn't mean the percieved colors, or the 'true' colors (before shadows and light). The brain interpretes shadows so well it is telling you what the 'true' colors are, even though they are the EXACT same color. It's the whole point of the optical illusion, bro...

Lexxx 09-27-2002 12:57 PM

hmm... ok

They are black & white anyway. They look different on every monitor, not just yours.

:1orglaugh The colors are exact shades of grey, the RGB components are all exactly the same. So it would look exactly the same on a B/W monitor as a color monitor.

I must say that this is one of the best optical illusions I have ever seen. I am going to dig up some of the ones I found and show you guys in a bit... there are a few that really stand out like this one that really blow my mind away.

The one that got us freaking out, is if you cut a small square from B (ie a square with just the colour in), and move the layer up to A... its just disappears.

??? Yes it is.

Stealthy 09-27-2002 03:27 PM

I had to check it in Photoshop too. But yup, same shade... weird...

booker 09-27-2002 03:37 PM

very cool.. here's the bio on the guy who made it:

i cant :( that mental image of you in those speedos is just too good to pass up....

quiet 09-27-2002 03:48 PM

yeah, i really dig some of Adelson's work. 'reality' is not what it might seem.

fear 09-27-2002 07:09 PM

crazy stuff...

I actually think that`s the craziest optical illusion I`ve seen all day!

quiet 09-27-2002 07:13 PM

to actually see it, just cut a chunk out of each box and move away from the main graphic - you can actually see the point where the color seems to change as it moves far enough away. amazing. like this:

http://207.240.40.4/uvlight/images/illusion.gif

mastamindz 09-27-2002 07:22 PM

Damn thats cool

Yes, I know what you mean... but it is sort of an illusion, because the colors are the same, yet the brain is percieving them as being different, simply because it is so good at dervire the 'true' color of the object, despite shadows, etc...

This really does show the power of the human brain, and I think it is amazing.

Cool... thanks. This is a good commented he made about the image: "As with many so-called illusions, this effect really demonstrates the success rather than the failure of the visual system. The visual system is not very good at being a physical light meter, but that is not its purpose. The important task is to break the image information down into meaningful components, and thereby perceive the nature of the objects in view."

Lexxx 09-28-2002 11:55 AM

OK... decided to check it in photoshop... wtf? weird shit...
