Splogs vs. Blogs: Let's Duke it Out!

In one corner, we have the blog writers, those crazy webmasters who lovingly fashion each post by hand, catering to their surfers and tailoring everything for the search engines. They tend to have a handful of high quality blogs like this because the whole process is so time consuming.

In the other corner, we have the splog creators. They grind out hundreds to thousands of blogs, each filled with RSS feeds, auto posts, scrapers, and rotators. They work under the premise that a thousand blogs making one sale each is a lot of money.

So which is better? I'm sure it comes down to a matter of preference. Why do you choose one or the other?

spacedog 12-18-2007 12:10 PM

Handwritten blogs make more sales, get more traffic and are more productive

kovacs 12-18-2007 01:00 PM

Do both... High quality blogs for long term income you can count on, splogs for getting your crap indexed.

TheSenator 12-18-2007 01:04 PM

I only have time for one mega blog along with two smaller blogs. Sbloggers might hit the jackpot every once in awhile but a true blogger hits the jackpot consistently.

Consistency usually wins out at the end.

fuzebox 12-18-2007 01:12 PM

Shrug, I don't see any reason to compare one to the other, it's just a form of content management.

Antonio 12-18-2007 01:17 PM

I have 200+ blogs that are updated with original content (I'm paying for posts + writing a few myself) and only a handful of splogs. The splogs I started as an experiment and I might say it worked (to a ceratin degree).

The splogs are maisntream blogs that are fed by (you guessed it) RSS feeds, when mixed they get a (very) few Google hits but if you have the numbers you can make some $$$ I think. I'll be setting up shitload of them in the next 1-3 months, some adult and some mainstream, wish me luck and if anybody has any secrets to share now is the time.

Holy shit... a business thread by RevengeBucks_Monica? :eek2

Iron Fist 12-18-2007 01:50 PM

Serious splog business.

papill0n 12-18-2007 02:37 PM

Heya Monica :))

I have a combo of both. I get better results from my hand written blogs but the splogs are new so it is a little early to tell 100%

RevengeBucks_Monica 12-18-2007 04:14 PM

Yeah, I think a combo of both is probably what works best... having some quality hand written blogs that you put heart and soul into makes the good cash, and splogs seem to serve well as a traffic push.

Exactly. It's like cooking, a clever mixture works best.

I have about 30 or so blogs and they all have handwritten posts. I plan to start farming out the posts this next year so I can build more as I'd like to get up to around 100 blogs or more.

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 12-19-2007 12:07 AM

blogs suck

hardcoreblogger 12-19-2007 12:12 AM

as others have said a combo works best. but i put more effort on the blogging than splogging side - one single, handwritten and seo'd blog can outperform a large network of splogs!

rowan 12-19-2007 12:51 AM

Hand written blogs will probably last a lot longer than a splog network, but by the time the SE's figure out how to ban/block them there will be another 'innovation' that everyone will flock to.

It's a fine art with SE filtering and ranking because they need to minimise collateral damage... make the most of it while you can.

ilbb 12-19-2007 01:13 AM

both works if You do it right way

RevengeBucks_Monica 12-19-2007 02:07 AM

Duh guys, you know the next big thing are these really neato things called BBSs! You have to use your phone to dial in, and I've heard you can get smokin' hot 300baud modems to do it!

I think I agree with the majority here, that time spent on well written blog entries probably pays off more in the long run... and that a mix of the two techniques is useful.

smutnut 12-19-2007 03:52 AM

Splogs take less time and do exactly what they are intended to do, promote and sell and I have several of them on first page google for specific keywords. The idea that splogs get treated any differently than blogs in the search engines is a myth.

One the other hand, if you have something unique to say or sell definitely go with a blog, but for the time you have to invest in it, you should probably just write a novel.

I could have my definitions screwed up for what a splog actually is though

martinsc 12-19-2007 04:05 AM

i prefer quality over quantity....

VicD 12-19-2007 04:13 AM

handwritten wins in the long run

darksoul 12-19-2007 04:43 AM

maybe handwritten blogs will make you more money
but I'd rather use my time for something else.

nickutis 12-19-2007 04:46 AM

How can be a splog better than other competing 1000 splogs with same rss content? It's hard to get them high in google!

My vote goes to handwritten blogs.

smutnut 12-19-2007 05:58 AM

Okay, I guess I'm misunderstanding what a blog versus splog actually is. If all you're doing is pulling feeds into your splog, then you're probably not going to get much out of it. But, if you're pulling feeds and altering so that keywords match the keyword density you want in compliance with certain urls and etc., the splog will get the same ranking as a blog if like I do you consider a blog a unique piece of prose original written by the blog owner.

There are many popular blogs out there that don't even come up in search engines by the average person because they aren't even aware of them and aren't typing in the necessary seo info. These blogs get popular by word of mouth and link exchanges and usually aren't used to promote porn.

Google can't tell the difference between a blog or a splog unless you're just pulling unaltered feeds from other blogs

Are you sure? Any explanation on why?

Personally I have splogs with 2K uniques a day. On the other hand, I have hand-written blogs with only 100-200 uniques on each.

That's because my splogs update MUCH more frequently and there are MUCH more content (posts) on them :2 cents:

And yeah... I'm talking about morphing splogs only.

scottybuzz 12-19-2007 07:45 AM

http://flirtwebcams.com hot blog there

But do those splogs make more sales than the blogs? It's the conversion rates that matter rather than the traffic.
