Recommend high end computer speakers please

I have Altec Lansings on one machine, and they rule... but I want bigger, louder, better. I know jack about computer audio however. Any recommendations from the audiophiles?

Bose.

The best I have ever heard are these expensive Klipsch speakers they sell at Best Buy. I can't remember the exact model number, but EVERY Klipsch product I've heard has kicked ass. Very top-notch.

I've been thinking about this as well.
I have a decent subwoofer 2 speaker system now,
but i honestly i think it would be best to just route the signal from the pc's soundcard into a home stereo/amp system set up in your office.

thats what i plan to do some day.

cheers,
BV

I was looking at those today actually.

I like the idea of going from the sound card to the stereo receiver... but I would have no clue how to do it right. Output from where, input to where?

Is there some sort of tutorial online? I am sure I could half ass rig something up, but I would rather do it right the first time.

Lane just got his 'computer' speakers last week. Bose 5-piece, incl. receiver for about $1400. Sweet mother of Christ, they sound awesomely good. Beats the shit out of any Klipsch, that's for sure.

Oldy 09-26-2002 11:06 PM

I like the altec ones, they are quite compact too, get the travel ones :)

Lane 09-26-2002 11:07 PM

i use the klipsch promedia 2.1 -- they are insane. I can't even imagine how the 5.1 sound.

Speakin of the Devil :winkwink:

I have my sound card going directly into a home audio system and it cranks. I never saw the point of buying computer speakers, just go to Circuit City and buy a home stereo system and plug it into that.

It's pretty basic stuff, really. As long as one side is an output, one side is an input and the plugs fit, you're probably doing it right :)

I'm not sure if it's the 5.1s I saw or not. I know that I have seen 2 or three different models and they all sound awesome. The last set I heard just blew me away. Every sound was perfect: the highs were high, bass was thumping (without obscuring the other sounds)... really nice.

We're both in Columbus. In fact, Lane is locked in my basement and is only allowed out for supper.

Hey man for how much did you get those? If you don'w mind answering of course :)

magnatique 09-26-2002 11:51 PM

Get the klipsch 5.1 THX certified...

had the 4.0 when they first got out... clarity is there, and you can shake your whole house with the 400+ Watts...

I wouldn't choose any other computer speaker... they're real computer speakers, so you just plug it into your sound card... you can get their decoder as well for your home theater if you want...

but for computer, and not sound theater, the klipshes are the best for games, music and any other stuff

I actually just bought my second set this week ;)

FlyingIguana 09-27-2002 12:33 AM

klipsch

Amputate Your Head 09-27-2002 12:46 AM

when it's all said and done, a computer is not an amplifier. It never was.... probly never will be. If you want real audio and not some half-assed excuse for sound being forced from your box that's not designed to do that, then forget all about "computer" speakers and start thinking sound system.... you'll be much happier in the end.

Get some killer speakers.... whatever brand they may be.... (I personally only use Bose throughout the house) and plug your system to an amplifier. Running tunes straight outta the box and into some geek speakers is just lame.

All you gotta do aside from buying the gear, is run a cable from your sound card output to the amps auxillary inputs... 3.5 jack to a dual, or "Y" RCA (most likely). That's it. (speaker wire of course too) and buy good shit.... quality speakers.... Monster Cable wiring... etc...

FlyingIguana 09-27-2002 12:50 AM

save the 'real' speakers for your living room. klipsch gets the job done without making your pc station twice as big.

Amputate Your Head 09-27-2002 01:02 AM

didn't know space was an issue.... I have modular workstations and the audio gear easily fits on top of a portion of one unit, completely out of the way, with plenty of room to spare.

FlyingIguana 09-27-2002 01:07 AM

the speakers take up tons of room, depending on what you're getting.

about $900 for the speakers and $300 for the receiver

bigdog 09-27-2002 05:42 AM

Bose speakers suck you got ripped off Lane
you should have gotten a klipsch setup like this http://www.reliableaudiovideo.com/klippacrf7rc.html price is kind of cheap casue they are not a authorized dealer.

WombRaider 09-27-2002 06:17 AM

Hey Lane,

What model Onkyo receiver did you get, if you don't mind me asking? I was looking at those the other day. They sounded pretty awesome at Circuit City.

ozjammer 09-27-2002 07:19 AM

Go for klipsch.
You guys are easier to get em in US.
The high end altec is up to $500 or less, if I am not mistaken. They got new ones coming. I got one too, it's really nice.
But I prefer klipsch prmodeia 5.1 though, 100W each for the satellite speakers, it's gonna rock da house!
I have not had a test drive for performance. It's hard to get klipsh dealer in OZ. I can only found one and it's on the internet selling for around A$1000 - 1500 or U$500 - $750 most likely to a lot cheaper there. And they got quintet home ent system which I fell in love with, looks tiny but punched with performance. No offense for bose cube but I prefer klipsch.

Yea, Im rockin the Klipsch as I type. I scored them from Best Buy for under $200 and they kick ass!

http://www.klipsch.com/

The Promedia 2.1's are all you need Pimp Juice.

magnatique 09-27-2002 09:18 AM

I'd rather get computer speakers that were meant to be for computers, and save money there..

wait a little bit, and get myself a bose home theater for the living room..

Game sound is different than normal music, so it makes a different I have heard if using normal sound system on the computer, or computer speaker... but I ain't no gamer LOL, so I wouldn't be able to tell...

all's I know is I love my klipshes ;)

BradShaw 09-27-2002 09:26 AM

Bose are pieces of shit speakers made of paper. I have several sets of speakers in my house, anywhere from crappy bose lifestyle(which I regret buying) to $500 old speakers from college, to $30k speakers, to something in between.

Bose is marketing genius, that's about it. Stay away from them if you want good sound.

Check out polk, Klipsch, or Acoustic Research .

Oldy 09-27-2002 09:34 AM

Yeah, BOSE is the best.

Eric 09-27-2002 10:33 AM

Doing some research on this subject myself I found this page. I thought you guys may want to take a look.

Research Here

Studio Standard Yamaha 10ms w/100 watt pushing.

Every studio across America mixes with these, not every but ALL major studios. Of course this isnt the best pc speakers, but its what I use.

http://www.retroaudio.ru/others/spea...S-10%20M.shtml

From Dre to Fugazi to D all use 10m's.

But I run my shit through my Towers instead. But for clarity and mixing 10ms baby.

I didnt know anything about receivers, so i asked them to give me what they use in the Bose store. The model is TX-SR500

evildick 09-27-2002 11:43 AM

Buy one of the new Audigy Platinum sound cards and just run a single coax cable from the digital output into the digital input of any dolby digital receiver. Sounds great.

I've got my full 5.1 system hooked up to it that way, but with a soundblaster live instead. My subwoofer alone is 350 watts into 4 ohms (15 inch speaker). There's no comparison to computer speakers.

I can shake a glass off the table if I crank it up.

E-Randy 09-27-2002 11:46 AM

definitely klipsch !

hehe.... the Lifestyle series are a ripoff..... but their other shit is perfectly good. I've got several sets of 201's and 301's combined with Polk subs throughout the house and they rock me consistently on a daily basis.

Quit fucking around and get yourself a real 5.1 system.
