Uhm... I think the point was that he knew it wasn't his family, thus he had no reason to be here.
Anyway, it's only been a couple weeks. Even if he had just disappeared, it would take a little while before I bothered to ask. And I would have eventually. But since he said he was leaving, I have no reason to ask, do I?
