It started showing "read-only filesystem" errors over cmd line, rebooted the box, never came back, asked colo techs, they told me the server was not seeing the drive anymore. It was a Seagate SATA 250GB ...

There's no reason to deploy any server you care about without RAID these days. Drives die all the time, be ready for it.

Very easy.......you can't prevent failing hardware....but if it's your own server
you make sure to use a raid 1 setup which uses 2 hdd's and mirrors the data.
1 drive fails....the server keeps running you swap the faulty drive the raid
rebuilds all without a reboot or single second of downtime......for the overly
paranoid amongst us.....you can use raid 5 + 1 which uses 3 hdd's.
