WMV or MPG

Which one do you prefer to work with and why?

martinsc 12-10-2007 06:59 AM

wmv :thumbsup

Iron Fist 12-10-2007 07:03 AM

mpg because I like how it sounds.

testpie 12-10-2007 07:10 AM

Other - FLV, because more people have the Flash plugin installed than Windows Media Player's plugin. That, and using certain techniques when showing FLVs in an SWF video player can help to protect your file from being directly downloaded, whereas I seem to remember needing an MMS server application to properly protect WMV content from being directly downloded.

PornDiscounts-R 12-10-2007 07:15 AM

well.. when we are talking to work with a la edit/encode i would say mpeg as i voted for sure.
but for final output wmw for sure + flash of course :)

Is there a way to stop the FLV from being loaded up like a youtube vid? Firefox and IE7 have tabs and I've done it and seen people load 5+ tabs and play/pause the video for it to load. If they do that do you think it could use more bandwidth than people hotlinking? Also when I think of hot linking I think of galleries and tour trailers.

I'm not sure what you are angling at - the whole purpose of FLV is to be streamed and played, as opposed to needing to download the whole file first.

If you mean can you stop other sites from embedding your FLV files and streaming them in their players, then yes you can - just look online about using .htaccess files to restrict access to your .flv files to only your own server and other permitted referrers.

kowalsky 12-10-2007 08:32 AM

mpeg. I have no reason for this, I just hate wmv!

Working in feeds that offered a selection between mpg and anything else.. we found that 99% of our clients always clicked on wanting to view the content in mpg form

yes.. it has to do with the autoplay feature. Look for it when you are encoding the video. If you have a custom .flv player, you can also set it to not download the file until the play button is clicked.

Both good ways to save on bandwidth.

wmv IS mpeg4 just wrapped in in an encrypted Microsoft wrapper normally,
as is the current so the version of Flash video, the ONLY reason to use anything
but mpeg is to make it harder for people to play your videos. I would always
use plain mpeg files for all videos, without any proprietary wrapping.

Scott McD 12-10-2007 02:48 PM

Mpg

.....

CarolCox 12-10-2007 03:03 PM

We release in both WMV and MPG, as well as in M4V for iPods, MP4 for PSP and other PDAs and players, and in 3GP for cellphone video :)

But even with 5 different formats available, well over 90% of the downloads are in the WMV format. That is what the vast majority of users still want.

We did a test with FLV but our members just didn't like it. There is such a trade-off with quality versus file size.

There really is no beneficial reason what-so-ever to provide wmv files.

Bojangles 12-10-2007 04:50 PM

Doesn't really matter.

wmv provides a better video with less file size.

kesey 12-11-2007 09:44 AM

Yup. I'm a WMV guy, just because I've been using the Windows Media Encoder for a long time and I understand it. It's easy. It's free. Fuck it. I've never been able to find an MPG encoder that I can use as well, not to say one doesn't exist, I just haven't found one.

Myself, I might try FLV. At one point I was pretty good in Flash. You can do so much more with FLV because you have control of the player and the content. Like someone said you can work in Flash to create the SWF file that then downloads and plays the FLV file. The possibilities are limitless. Basically, any animation you see on television, you can do or approximate in Flash, and you can have the movie playing at the same time: Imagine your trailers looking like the Monday Night Football promos.

The only problem I had with Flash was it's a goddamn motherfucking pain in the ass to use. You gotta use it everyday to remember all the ActionScript and the quirks of the klugy fucking interface that takes forever just to tell it to spin a ball around. I just don't have time to fuck around with it anymore.

But as far as just using a utility to encode FLVs, well, FLVs, might be the way to go, if not now, for the future. They are streaming and they look good. You don't have to do fancy stuff with them. You can just use them for straight movies, and, who knows, one day Adobe might actually make Flash plausible to use for the average video editor, a kind of hybrid of Premier Pro and After Effects.

Might want to check your facts on that one.

WMV / ASF are Microsoft formats (not wrappers), yes. However WMV is not inherently encrypted or subject to DRM.

BucksMania 12-12-2007 06:17 AM

so far seems like wmv is the way to go
lets see some more opinions

minniesoporno 12-12-2007 06:20 AM

We just changed all our tour movies to flv's.
http://tour.teendreams.com/featured_movie.php
Much quicker to stream and quality is great

We use WMV's in our members area, but as well as that option we are converting the lot to flv too :thumbsup

MissMina 12-12-2007 11:07 PM

WMV format and I am in the process of adding FLASH.

mryellow 12-12-2007 11:17 PM

Newest Flash player support MP4, they are moving away from FLV.

Thus give it a year or so for market penetration then it'll be much easier to
just do everything in MP4 and avoid all these dodgy embedded windows
media players etc.

Less encoding for producers when it's fewer formats.......
