Dozens of drivers made a mad rush for cheap gas after a station employee accidentally changed the price to 33 cents a gallon.

An employee closing Trig's Minocqua Shell for the night mistakenly entered the price of a gallon of gasoline as 32.9 cents instead of $3.299 on Monday night.

He left about 10 p.m., but drivers could still use their credit cards to buy gas.

Word of the bargain spread fast in the rural northern Wisconsin community, with 42 people buying 586 gallons of gas in an hour and 45 minutes. One person had pumped 27 gallons and two purchased 18 gallons.

Local police saw the horde at the station and called store manager Andrea Reuland, who went to the station and pushed the emergency stop.

"There were cars two deep at each of my pumps," said Reuland, who knew many of the drivers and told them they were being dishonest ? the main store sign had the correct price.

"I was very upset that there's that many dishonest people," she said. "They knew there was a problem, and they took advantage of an employee's mistake and I think that's terrible."

The employee, who has been there for about six months, had changed the gas prices 25 times in the past six months.

"It was an honest mistake," Reuland said. "I could have done it."

Area residents were still talking about it Friday morning.

"Was it you guys?" a woman in the station asked Reuland. "Why do I always miss the good stuff?"

I actually had this happen to me, once.

I went inside and explained that the pump was wrong, because I'm disturbingly honest. The $5/hr cigarette jockey just shrugged it off.

Not a whole lot different than those peeps who knowingly took advantage of the credit-card uplink scam a few weeks ago, imho.

FUCK the gas station owners. These are the same people who raise the price of gas as soon as something significant happens that will effect the pricing later. No reason they can't sell their current stock based on what that batch cost them then raise the price later as needed.

They also raise their prices when they know traffic will be heavier.

Fuck em and take their .33 gas. :321GFY

I believe that you're talking about the gasoline DISTRIBUTORS and the levels higher up.

Blaming gas stations for the rise and fall of the cost of gas is like blaming your local new car dealer for the rise and fall of the cost of a Chevy....

It was a Shell station.

Shell's revenues of $318.8 billion in 2006 made it the third-largest corporation in the world by revenues behind only ExxonMobil and Wal-Mart. Its 2006 gross profits of $26 billion made it the world's second most profitable company, after ExxonMobil and before BP. Forbes Global 2000 in 2007 ranked Shell the eighth largest company in the world.

I don't know how it works in the US, but in Vancouver the stations are franchises and they sell the gas for the price that head office says to sell it for, and then make a flat amount per litre sold regardless of the sign pricing.

So really, $.10 a litre of $1.00 a litre, the stations make the same amount.

We do have independant's too, but not many.

part of what he was saying is that station owners shouldn't be raising prices on gas that they've already bought and paid for and is in the ground tank..

Which makes it perfectly OK to steal from them, because, you know, making an extra $1 on some jackass in a Suburban is going to assist so much in their overhead.

Christ, it pains me how stupid you people can be.

I didn't say anything made anything ok...

Just that the owners raise prices before they get the gas that they have to pay the higher prices for...

and no.. I don't think the price hikes justify stealing... Take that up with the other guy...

Ah, OK. You didn't seem quite so passive in your observation - seemed like a statement.

Which is much like UPS and FedEx charging you the extra $5 'Gas Fee', when they've had their prices locked in for years, not to mention the additional taxes on the same at the airports using gas as an excuse for the rate hikes.

Now, if you want to fight 'da man' who's fucking you, stop getting your shit shipped overnight - and take the Bus! :1orglaugh
