Serious question for the GFY gay crowd

I understand that Jodie Foster outed herself at some awards show. Some are happy, others seem pissed off because it took so long.

So I'm wondering if you feel it's somehow her responsibility to say that she's gay simply because she's a celebrity. I realize that her, or any relevant celebrity, coming out will make initial headlines and it seemingly more acceptable to those living in the dark ages, but is it REALLY their responsibility to do so JUST because they're famous?

Or do you respect their right to keep their private lives private?

Fletch XXX 12-06-2007 02:47 PM

Because its simple - she only witheld it because she knew she needed to reach success before doing it. Kind of like, by "hiding it" it admits shame if that makes sense.

TheLegacy 12-06-2007 02:47 PM

Jodie's gay? man - John Hinckley must be seriously pissed right about now

She has been with the same woman for 20 years.

Which is why some are angry with her for taking part in hiding it from public for so long, although it has been long known she is lesbian considering shes been with her lover for 20 years.

I don't think people that don't come out publicly are ashamed (okay, OTHER than Republican political figures). I think they're fearful of the reaction of others, and in many cases rightfully so. With how some people still view homosexuality, is it wrong to not want to be condemned or ostracized? Who wants to go through that?

thats all i really meant... i didnt mean she felt shame, i meant by hiding it, she becomes complicit in that line of thought, homosexuality being shameful etc due to public reaction.

ronaldo 12-06-2007 02:54 PM

I wouldn't blame her myself, but I'm not gay. I don't see being gay as a "cause". It's a chosen way of life that some people will NEVER accept.

But again, not being gay, I just asked to get a different perspective.

Damian_Maxcash 12-06-2007 02:55 PM

I actually hadnt heard. Good on her.

When I was younger I would have questioned it, I didnt understand anyone being in the closet.

Now though I believe in peoples right to privacy. I would like it not to be an issue for anyone, but in reality it often is.

Ahh okay. Gotcha. That might be even more clear than what I first posted but is exactly what I meant.

The gay community seems divided amongst those that feel she MUST say she's gay publicly, be proud to be openly gay, and accept the "consequences" of BEING openly gay because there's nothing WRONG with being gay.

Others seem to feel they have a right to keep their sexuality to themselves because they realize some people will just never accept homesexuality.

Holly Lez! 12-06-2007 03:53 PM

As one of the token gays here, I believe it is up to the person when they want to out themselves. In the gay community we all knew she was gay for the longest time. I never felt any resentment towards her for not choosing to reveal her sexuality. Just as when an actor chooses not to mention who they are dating.

Holly Lez! 12-06-2007 03:54 PM

I do think it is sad when they try to be straight and date the opposite sex to be accepted though.

lol my god. I can't believe I worded it like that. Seriously, I must have been between thoughts of the way some celebrities CHOOSE to NOT be open about it. I apologize. I would never have meant to imply that or worded it that way intentionally.

You can choose to be a closet gay or out - either way you are gay.

Homosexuality is something to be ashamed of. You're basically broken.

sysk 12-06-2007 11:54 PM

so only english-speakers are intelligent ?

Well, mostly language is not a good measure of someone's intelligence. Unless you can't read and write your native language, or of course if your native language is French. If you speak French, you're a homosexual.. Please see above post.

psili 12-06-2007 11:59 PM

Can't say for other countries, but I think the USA homosexual crew fucked up when they didn't parlay off the Americans with Disabilities Act and decided on their whole "I'm different" parade.

Great move, kids. Great move.

And any gay person responding to my post -- I love you all. You're doing your best at keeping population down, so thank you, since natural selection isn't keeping pace.

I don’t understand why people like Foster have to “come out” on public? I’m sure all of her friends knew that she was licking carpet since she’s been living with same woman for 20 fucking years.. Everyone knew Tchaikovsky was fucking his servant, but nobody went out there with rainbow flag.. Why do gays always have to make big deal out of being GAY? I remember when they announced that Nathan Lane “came out”.. I was like, fuck when was he in “the closet”?

Phil 12-07-2007 12:05 AM

The thing about open homos is that they always want to rub it in your face. Parades, bumper stickers, marriage.. Why can’t you just live like everyone else. My neighbors are gay (two old girls) and everyone knows it. They don’t fucking advertise, and we don’t care what they do.. I didn’t know she came “out”, but now I do.. I you know what changed in my heart??? Absolutely nothing! She’s a great actress and I will see her next movie as soon as it comes out. .. In the movie theaters.

maybe 20 years ago. whos doing it now? You have entire gay network...

psili 12-07-2007 12:13 AM

To any gay person here:
You're stuck on an island. The last two male and female people on earth. You're GAY and an opposite sex of yours is GAY. Do you procreate? And if so, are you still gay?

Well, that's part of the problem. They WANT to live like everyone else. You even cite marriage. That's something they're being refused by those that see homosexuality as a sin. In 100 years, if we all lived equally and didn't judge anyone on anything, if there were still gay parades, that might seem a little redundant.

Good for you. Seriously I mean. Because many people probably WON'T ever watch her movies again for NO other reason than she IS gay.

Well, if it was the "Blue Lagoon" and the girl was into chicks and the dude liked cock, due to the sexual tension between the two there'd be a whole island of worthless shops but no children. Or something.

Well they can, just don’t move to Mississippi or some other place where people not used to that life style. You don’t see Chinese or Indian immigrants moving there and asking for love.. If you’re Mormon, you move to Salt lake City not to San Francisco.. You want to have “marriage” name it gay-”something-other-but-marriage”.. what’s wrong with civil-union? Same shit! Why don’t straight people start claiming word “gay” back and be “straight-gays” as in ever happy people..
