Who is familiar with Islam?

I remember reading a bunch about Islam and I want to see if I have this correct. Please correct me if I don't.

The Qur'an is the word of Allah, carried to man by the Prophet Muhammed.

There is another body of writings that describes behaviours, acts and speakings of the prophet, that were not direct commands from Allah. These are more a long the lines of "The Prophet Muhammed wrote always with his left hand, and thus we can assume the righteous of god will write always with their left hand.". Is this true? What is this body of writings called?

There are actually pictures of him. Really old ones. In islamic countries. But they dont say that out loud because it would be kinda stupid as they attack people who make pictures of him. Makes sense doesnt it.

I think you are referring to the codes of conduct set by Muhammed. Provided you believe in the five articles of faith and thus are indeed a true Muslim, Mohammed set codes of conduct or blessings necessary to show your submission to Allah.

Prayers, fasting, pilgrimage to Mecca, sacrifice ..... and the proper way to observe each one. I think they were called blessings?

No, I'm pretty sure there's an entire set of "holy" writings that's based soley on the life of the prophet. Not what he said, or the word of Allah as he related it to man kind, but based soley on his life and deeds. I wish I could remember what they're called.

You are looking for the Sunnah.

Quote:

Knowledge of the Sunnah comes primarily from the hadiths ("reports") about Muhammad's life, which were passed down orally until codified in the eighth century AD, some hundred years after Muhammad's death. The hadiths comprise the most important body of Islamic texts after the Quran; they are basically a collection of anecdotes about Muhammad's life believed to have originated with those who knew him personally.
Everything you need to know can be found here.

my understanding was that he didn't write anything... the qur'an was written decades after his death based on the oral traditions of what he supposedly preached.

I believe Mo Hammered is meant to have written it down in various stages throughout his life, supposedly as it was told to him by the Angel Gabriel. I think however, you are right that the actual Koran itself was 'put together' into one text after his death by some followers. They say, however, that all the works where directly obtained from Mo Hammered.

I didn't say he wrote down the Qu'ran. I said he carried the word of Allah. :)
