Sheriff: Boy wasn't cracking the books

A Caroline County 12-year-old, who police say slipped into school to view explicit Web sites on a PC there, is charged with breaking and entering.

A 12-year-old boy was on a school computer when Caroline County sheriff's deputies came upon him Saturday evening, but he wasn't studying anything the school had assigned.

Instead, Sheriff Homer Johnson said, the boy had sneaked into Bowling Green Elementary School to look at some sexually oriented sites on the World Wide Web.

"That was some real raunchy stuff he was looking at," Johnson said.

The boy was not charged with visiting Web sites he was too young to be legally looking at, but he was charged with breaking and entering and petty larceny.

Sgt. W.D. Beazley said the child entered the school about 5:20 p.m. through an unlocked window. He went into a teacher's desk and took about $13 before feasting his eyes on the otherwise forbidden Web sites.

The boy, a former student at the school, didn't know he had triggered a silent alarm. Beazley and Deputy S.L. Cary responded to the alarm and came upon the open window.

Beazley went through the same window and walked up behind the child, who apparently was too engrossed in the computer to immediately notice the deputies.

"He said he just wanted to play on the computer," Beazley said.

Beazley said that someone had entered the nearby School Board office the previous weekend, through another unlocked window, and spent about six hours on a school computer.

Beazley said police are investigating the possibility that the same boy was involved in that incident.

The boy was not named because he is a juvenile. He now attends a county middle school, police said.
