Does Porn Dictate The Server Market?

Okay, Im running on the assumption that 90% of adult sites are run through Apache Server.

Now, knowing the recent examples of MS trying to reassert their dominance, why hasn't Microsoft made signifigant inroads into the adult market?

Do they have a presence at InterNEXT? I've never been...DO they have a booth or anything?

Just my two pennies, but one would think that changing the minds of adult content providers would be important in leiu of there overall strategy...

Microsoft will beat Linux at clustering? As load balancing aka clustering is done at the TCP level, it's irrelevant. It's possible to cluter Linux and Windoze machines in the same farm.

The adult industry colocates with a much higher frequency than any other net industry I've been involved in, and Windows just isn't as convient to remote-admin via GUI as a UNIX machine is via SSH.

Anyone play with Apache 2 yet?

i think web programmers prefer to code for unix rather than for microsoft servers,,

this has a impact i'd say

no way 90% for porn hosts use apache. Perhaps 90% use linux or freeBSD, but apache is awful slow for that. I use it, but I'm not pushing the bw the big guys might use which apache wouldn't be able to handle.

Apache was designed firstly to be correct, speed 2nd.

i know several of the big, very busy sites run Apache. i've tuned Apache to push wire speed (~80-90Mbps) out of a server. if it had dual NICs it could have done 200Mbps, easy.

Apache is only a problem when people don't think things through. there is a *LOT* of very bad code out there that slows things down considerably.

i'm sure well over 90% of porn hosts use Apache. and of those that offer another platform, probably 90% of their customers still use Apache anyways.

Apache 1.3 will be the standard for many many years to come as Apache 2 is nowhere near ready. Besides, Apache 1.3 works perfectly ok. (No I haven't played with Apache 2 :) )

You must be a magician bro cuz I've never seen it go above 30Mbits

Tell me the specs/situation of this 1 server that can host "80 to 90Mbits" using apache.

Seriously, I'd love to know.

salsbury 09-24-2002 01:56 PM

you're gonna love it.. heh. dual pII-500 w/ 1024MB RAM. 500 hits per second was the average traffic. split across two Apache parents (one bound to each IP). this was 1.3.9, back in the day.
