He did more than that, and had/has both originality and singularity of style. Look at the guy's body of work for christ sake... http://www.vai.com/AllAboutSteve/bands.html How can you sum it up with only his Zappa stuff? His work on DLR's Eat 'em and smile album was incredible.

Why is Garcia such a standout guitar god in your mind? Beyond some fun little stoner tunes frankly I'm not seeing the genius there.

How can you choose between Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix etc? Where are the Allman Brothers and Lynrd Skynrd lol... There is no 'best' one, just the one you feel like listening to at any given moment I think. Once they reach a certain level it's just a matter of deciding which flavor you want.

Love his improvisation, use of dynamics and ability to play different styles from jazz to bluegrass.

Speaking of...Trey Anastasio should be on the list.

Steve Winwood? Isn't he much better known for his keyboard playing?

There are a lot of great guitar players on that list. Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour are my faves on that list. But my all time favorite guitarist and musician is Bob Mould of Husker Du and Sugar fame, who is now a solo artist.

Listen to Terrapin Station and tell me that Jerry can't hang with Vai, Belew, or even Malmsteen. Jerry also played on a ton of stuff outside the dead... check out his work with Ornette Coleman for example... Jerry is an innovator and a consumate stylist and completely unique. And I am a big fan of most of the players on that list... though I must say that I find Malmsteen boring after a listen or two.

Randy rhodes hands down... not only is he a great metal rock guitarist but he was classically train and was solely but Ozzy ozbournes own mouth the man responsible for song writing and structure and help him develop as a singer and musician

One could say the same about virtually every guitarist mentioned in this thread. For example, lots won't understand why Page is in your list, probably because they aren't fans of Zep. Then out come the "you either get it or you don't" comments.

Your list is great, loaded with huge talent. I'm just tossing out a few names that I would of had in the top 20, that's all.

It's all relative and subjective to each individual's taste.

I didn't mean that as a shot... it's just my experience with him, especially the Grateful Dead. Some people can't stand his noodling. Most of my friends prefer his solo band because it's more straight ahead rock and roll.

Who was that teenager several years ago who had a video online of him playing that was really popular? This was before YouTube. Everyone wondered why he wasn't in a band, and he had said he didn't want the attention (although I recall video of him playing on stage somewhere).
