Thriller came out 25 years ago

I wish I could better separate the music from the man but I would by lying if I said I couldn't remember what a big deal it was when it came out. I must have listened to my copy of the record a zillion times in the first week.

StuartD 11-30-2007 07:21 AM

I'm getting old :(

selena 11-30-2007 07:24 AM

Holy batfuck, Sarah. That is just what I needed to make me feel old!

I remember exactly where I was when that video debuted. I worked at a bar called the Garden and Gun Club in South Carolina then. Huge place in an old warehouse.

Anyhow, our VJ had the MTV world premier set up to show on the big screen panels. A whole dance floor of people came to a dead halt and watched MJ.

And no matter what, I still love to watch him dance.

Snake Doctor 11-30-2007 07:24 AM

Jeez, every girl in my class wanted to marry Michael Jackson. Guys were walking around wearing white gloves and those red and black leather jackets.

I wanted one but the stores that carried them were ALWAYS sold out. It's pretty funny when I think about it now.

Nikki_Licks 11-30-2007 07:26 AM

Here ya go Sarah

He definitely had some killer music back then.

I know..I just woke up this morning and heard on the radio that it was 25 years ago and instantly I was filled with flashes. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it for the first time, going to buy it, taking it to a friend's to listen to it for the first time, killing my sister for nearly scratching it for dancing too much in the room with the turntable so the needle moved and then waiting for the video (it was on the cover of the tv guide...even remember that).

I even remember having a debate at the lunch table that week (I was in 1st grade) with another kid about if he was black or white..lol. Which considering back then he was as black as he ever got is funny.

I had a Thriller poster over the head of my bead for years. You can tell you are old if you remember when Micheal Jackson was a sex symbol..lol

You know, I just clicked the link above and watched the video. It's amazing how something that old doesn't really look dated.

The 80's clothes aside, that is. :pimp

Mutt 11-30-2007 07:44 AM

The fact that people still try to copy it to this day, but can't quite pull it off tells you something.

I'm still a fan of the Smooth Criminal vid aswell !! :thumbsup

With all his bike crashes and other lifestyle things it is amazing he made it that long.

Thriller really is a great album..I think there were 7 singles off of it. I bet I still know the words to most of them.

Mutt 11-30-2007 07:49 AM

other than the Beatles that King of Pop era was the biggest thing ever.

people forget that Michael was almost forgotten and his career was dead - then that Off the Wall album came out - he was just a good looking young black guy at the time. the Sgt Peppers moon walking anorexic freakshow was yet to come.

Sarah_Jayne 11-30-2007 07:53 AM

I was going to mention Off The Wall..also great album..love Rock With You

pornguy 11-30-2007 07:53 AM

That was the most complete video ever made at the time. It was touted to be a mini movie, and changed the way videos were made.

Then he became a real freak, and fucked bubbles. and himself

A trip back in time - Wow! 25 years.. Holly! God i had the glove, the socks, the Beat IT jacket, the Thriller jacket and no Jackson outfit would be complete without the Jerry curls...

Now if we can just get them to have a Jackson 5 reunion, I can get all my old gear out! LoL!

They had a Jackson 6 reunion inbetween Thriller and Michael's next incarnation.
Remember that one?

The album they put out sucked, but they made more money on the tour than any other tour in history to that point.

Michael was always like Alec Baldwin in the way he carried his siblings....here's to hoping Alec Baldwin doesn't blow up one day like Michael did :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

NETbilling 11-30-2007 10:15 AM

Great stuff. One of the best performances ever.

Mitch

I sadly do remember that. We have had a lot of Jacksons doing tv in the UK lately. I am sure it is helping with legal bills. Jermaine was on Big Brother and and doing something else now that he is doing the media rounds about (that I haven't paid enough attention about to know what it is). I have to admit that Jermaine came off as a nice guy who was trying to help is strange brother dig himself out of the dirt.

It was my first lesson about how over hype can cause a backlash. I remember people loving it and then the same people bitching about it a few months later.

Vendot 12-03-2007 05:59 AM

Oh my god....... ill never forget it.

I was a little kiddie and it was the premier of the UK showing of thriller and everyone went mad. Everyone was obsessed with seeing it and the tv channel was advertising the fact that they were going to show it.

It was only a fucking music video, but there was this absolute craze about the whole thing. It was mad. I dont think we'll ever see anything like that again with so much hype.

[ScreaM] 12-03-2007 07:07 AM

So MJ becomes a powerful wise-man?

alby_persignup 12-03-2007 09:18 AM

now he makes a lot of changes!

Drake 12-03-2007 11:46 AM

Vendot 12-03-2007 12:00 PM

I'll never forget when i went to see him in concert at Wembley on the BAD tour... it was the most amazing concert ive ever seen.

Even today no-one seems to know how the smooth criminal 45% lean is done. This web page is bollocks:
