Bandwith sky rockteted!!! HELP!

I have no idea whats going on with my server. Bandwith went from 15-20 Mbits/s all of november until nov 25th when it went from 13 Mbits/s to 61 Mbits/s in 30 minutes!! every since then its been way above normarl around 40 Mbits/s.

I have .htacess and no videos on this server. Traffic to my sites were just as normal so I dont know whats going on.

Anyone have any idea or suggestions? I dont know much about the technical aspects.

check your logs for hotlinking. Sometimes htaccess is not enough.

Have you tried contacting your host to have them research it? Some other things that come to mind - could be:

hitbots
bad redirect in .htaccess causing your site to recursively loop on itself
bad redirect in .htaccess for hotlink protection sending each image back to the main page - the surfer will see just a red X - but you'll force them to re-download the entire site which they'll never see neways

do you have anything related to zoey zane on your site ?

Totally.

FYI, at MojoHost we'd already have worked with the client to figure out the problem and even if it was their oversight if it was an honest mistake they wouldn't be getting a bill for overage.

Google images? Get more inexpensive bandwidth, see sig :)

That was my thought too :) IF it is that, it says all you need to know right there.

Brad

with that in mind, you're on my list of people to check with next time I need a new box.

You should press your host until they give you a solid answer as to whats going on. If they cant figure out why you are pushing more traffic, how are they going to handle a situation where your sites are down or not working?

We have monitoring in place at www.realitychecknetwork.com that allows us usually to detect these issues before our customers and analyze the situation and provide solutions right away.

Its in a host's best interest to keep their customers happy and if you aren't making money from the traffic and you are working with them they shouldn't charge you for the overages, or at least work out a huge reduction.

maybe do a rootkit check:

Your box could now be a " zombie " ....

Man that sucks, and I agree its time to find a new host. Check out www.cyberwurx.com they are awesome.

Niklas 11-29-2007 08:36 AM

Ok.. my host is on it!
They are actually a good and helpful host, so dunno why they were so slow today.. but Im looking for a second server anyways so I'll check on some of the suggestions.

That would be my guess if there are no movies, your probably supplying free hosting of illegal tar files

Andy Servers4Less 11-29-2007 09:44 AM
